Here is everything that happened in the episode, including whether Charlie pulls Mara off the cases.

Mara saves a bank robber face his fears

More from NBC

The case for the week is a man who is using reverie to rob banks. Of course, it doesn’t help him financially in the real world, but it doesn’t take long for Mara to realize that there’s something bigger at play. When she gets the guy to talk, another man shows up on a bike, wraps a chain around him, and then takes off.

The guy on the bike was the man who had broken into the home of the reverie bank robber. This is the man our bank robber is actually scared of, as it turns out the guy had come back and threated our bank robber with hurting his family should he speak. In the end, Mara convinces the bank robber to get out of his reverie and admit everything about the night of the robbery.

Paul shares his darkest fear

Mara only learns everything because Paul is willing to share his own reverie. It turns out that the computer can create manifestations of the fears. This allows the human psyche to get over the fears, believing that’s what a person needs.

Paul shows Mara his own reverie, the home he grew up in. While most of the home is positive, there’s a door that appeared once and Paul had nothing to do with it. Behind that door is Paul’s abusive drunk father, allowing Paul the chance to face his fear in a way that nothing else has been able to.

Mara’s derealization gets worse

Rather than follow Paul’s instructions, Mara decides to welcome Brynn into her life. This means having a one-sided conversation with the computer-generated version of her niece. While Brynn does react with some smiles and shakes of the head, she doesn’t talk right away. However, it’s clear that this is getting worse.

Charlie decides that he needs to pull Mara off the job. It’s not safe for her, especially if she’s not willing to follow Paul’s advise. Admitting that this is the best she’s felt for the first time in a long time, she gets Charlie to keep her one and agrees to take the anti-anxiety meds to stop herself from seeing Brynn.

She decides to go to the house her sister and niece were killed, facing her own fears. While there, the worlds collide and we’re left wondering just what’s going on inside Mara’s brain.
