Supergirl’s finale brings loss, hope and new opportunities for the characters. With plenty of changes, there’s a lot to look forward to next season. Here’s our recap.

“We never showed you Star Wars?”

Supergirl wastes no time diving into the action in the season’s finale. Chaos is all around and Alura sure figured out how to use her powers quickly. M’yrnn gives J’onn one final memory before sacrificing himself to stop Reign. For the time being, the chaos subsides.

Even though Mon-El’s beacon broke, Imra said she got a signal from it and that prompted her and Brainiac-5 to come back. Brainiac tells Mon-El and Winn that he can’t stay in the Legion. He wants Winn to take his place, which would explain why Jeremy Jordan was bumped down to a recurring character next season and we’ll be seeing more of Jesse Rath’s Brainiac. It also explains Chris Wood not returning next season.

While Sam is looking for the Fountain of Lillith, she sees Patricia and thinks that she’s trying to trick her into drinking the wrong water. It’s a strong moment between the two even though we know Patricia is dead. Back on Earth, Selena and her fellow Dark Kryptonians get Reign back. Thomas Coville isn’t dead like they thought and he’s eyeing an escape.

Alex confides in Lena about wanting to have kids, but not knowing if she should wait until she finds someone who wants kids or go it alone. In another section of the DEO, Winn tells James about Brainy wanting him to join the Legion. James reassures him that he’s a genius and tells him about his earlier unmasking when he went to save a kid.

At the DEO, they get a distress signal from J’onn’s ship. Alura tells Kara that they have to do whatever it takes to stop Reign since they can’t contain her. Kara gives in fairly easily on her whole “I don’t kill” mantra. Meanwhile, in the other realm, Sam realizes that her mom was helping her and she’s getting stronger. She wakes up just in time and races off to meet with the others.

During the big showdown between Supergirl and co. and Reign and co., quite a bit of damage is done. Brainy and Imra are in the ship above and that goes down as Supergirl fights Reign. Sam shows up and Reign loses control of her heat vision. Mon-El saves J’onn at the cost of his own life. She blasts Alura and Sam, too.

Supergirl’s plan is to go back in time because she realizes that there is a prison that can hold Reign. Her, Reign and Sam go into the other realm and Sam gives her the water that makes her weaker. It’s a clever solution and a way to keep Mon-El and Alura alive while staying true to her “I don’t kill” mantra after all. With the loss of M’yrnn, there are still consequences in this episode, just not as many as we might have expected.

Mon-El congratulates Kara on the big win and they have one of their moments where you can tell how they both feel about each other but that they’re going in different directions. Kara realizes that Argo City isn’t her home anymore and Mon-El knows that he has to go back to the future because that’s where he belongs. They both understand and Mon-El tosses her a Legion ring.

Sam and Ruby thank Lena and Alex and Lena delivers the good news that she’s 100% human now. Winn tells James that he has to go with the Legion and James essentially says that he wants to unmask as the Guardian. Alex wants to give J’onn notice and he wants to promote her to Director of the DEO instead. She gets to take a step back from risking her life, but doesn’t totally have to give up her lifestyle necessarily.

Alura lets Kara know that she’s proud of her and that Selena will stand trial. Lena hands over the black rock and when Alura mentions none being left on Earth, and we know that she has some more stashed somewhere.

James coming out as the Guardian isn’t a huge deal as he does it over the phone and it winds up on the news. Changes are afoot for everyone on this show pretty much and it’ll be interesting how everything plays out next season.

Lena calls Eve to tell her that they are ready to begin phase two of their trials. The show then takes us back to 48 hours earlier and we see another Supergirl at the Siberian Border just wrapped in a blanket while the real Supergirl was going to the other realm with Sam and Reign. There’s no doubt that Lena is up to something and I can’t wait to explore that next season.

Supergirl airs on The CW on Mondays at 8:00 PM EST.
