Young & Hungry catch of the week: Blind dates and home makeovers
By Reed Gaudens
The final season of Young & Hungry finds Gabi and Josh finally in a relationship, but can they survive filthy apartments and third wheels?
After four and a half seasons of trial and error, Gabi and Josh are finally giving love a serious shot, just in time for Young & Hungry to bid adieu with its final season. But just because the twosome have decided to commit to a healthy relationship free of punch cards and bouts of amnesia doesn’t mean it will be easy — especially when Gabi gets back to her usual tricks.
In the one-hour final season premiere of Young & Hungry, Gabi and Josh return from their romantic vacation in Aspen to something unusual: stability. Of course, that doesn’t last too long when Gabi senses Elliot and Yolanda’s unease. Fearing that they will view her as an authority figure if she sleeps at Josh’s penthouse, she proposes Josh stay the night at her place. As expected, it does not go well.

Sure, Josh has been spoiled by his millions and the amenities they provide (such as a daily housekeeper and personal chef), but he’s not out of line to be disgusted by Gabi and Sofia’s bathroom. It’s a bigger mess than any one of Gabi’s schemes. There’s no toilet paper, bras hang in the shower, the water runs brown… Things don’t look up for Josh at night, when he’s sweating the bed, bruised by a broken spring, and hearing gunshots outside.
When Gabi strolls into work the next morning, there’s hell to pay. Josh sneaked out of her apartment in the middle of the night, and she’s not happy. She’s also not happy when she returns home to find Josh hired a housekeeper and replaced most of her furniture. On the other hand, Sofia’s on cloud nine, but Gabi takes Josh’s renovations to mean that he thinks her and her “crap” isn’t good enough for him. Should Josh have made over her apartment without asking?
Probably not, but when their first fight as an official couple clears up, Gabi’s ready to accept the fancy new bed, fridge, and air conditioner. But Josh has it all removed out of principle, even if the fridge had to be wheeled out with Sofia kicking and screaming. It’s nothing compared to Sofia’s constant interruptions in Gabi and Josh’s relationship in the premiere’s second episode. Fed up with Sofia’s constant presence in their dates, Josh resolves to set Sofia up with a friend.
Sofia’s first date with Josh’s dentist Dick (Aimee Carrero’s real-life husband Tim Rock) goes better than Elliot and Yolanda’s side story about Elliot’s “dude-oir” photoshoot to reignite his and Alan’s spark. However, Gabi — you know just by her name showing up that this takes a drastic turn — sees Dick texting his ex-girlfriend Kayla and worries that Sofia’s in for hurt. She takes matters into her own hands and stops by Kayla’s hair salon for an appointment and recon. When will she learn to stay out of situations that don’t involve her?
Next: Gabi and Josh get a little bit closer in Young & Hungry's midseason finale
As pure as Gabi’s intentions might have been, her rendezvous with Kayla inspires the ex-girlfriend to crash Gabi and Josh’s double date with Sofia and Dick to propose to Dick, which he accepts. Sofia’s none too pleased to learn Gabi’s the one who motivated Kayla’s eleventh hour shot in the dark. Much like Alan believing Elliot was converting to Judaism to win over his mother, Gabi thought she was ensuring that she and Sofia wouldn’t drift apart, even if her execution failed that mission.
Young & Hungry’s final season doesn’t miss a beat and continues to stir up the kinds of low-stakes sitcom snafus we’ve come to rely on from the underrated comedy. In the end, Gabi and Josh found an understanding that worked for their relationship, while Gabi and Sofia prioritized their friendship over the men (or lack thereof) in their lives. Even Elliot managed to charm his way into Alan’s mother’s acceptance in two hilarious episodes that prove how hard it will be to say goodbye.
What do you think, Youngries? Should Gabi and Josh have found a better compromise for their living arrangements? Will Sofia soon find her perfect match and keep up her Thursday night date nights with Gabi? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
