Nicolas Cage, the actor who previously played Ghost Rider is set to portray yet another Marvel character. This time, in the Spider-Verse.

Apparently, Sony is taking another chance with Nicolas Cage. Despite all the criticisms of Cage and his portrayal of Ghost Rider, the studio has cast him as another Marvel hero. This time around, Cage will play Noir Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

According to Collider, Cage is providing the voice for Noir Spidey but he’s definitely going to have fans’ heads turning when they learn Cage is the newest Spider-Man.

On its own, the casting isn’t all that shocking. But after everything that happened with Ghost Rider, it is surprising. Nevertheless, Sony is confident in Cage’s ability, especially considering the stakes at hand with their Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will establish a world where various Spider-Men exist and that could potentially set up numerous follow-ups. Those prospective films are still a ways off but they could be in the works.

More from Marvel Movies

As for Nicolas Cage, his portrayal of Noir Spider-Man should be interesting. He won’t be the main star since Miles Morales and Peter Parker are the focus of the film but Cage is bound to have a few standout scenes with them. At the same time, we’ll probably see some of Noir Spider-Man’s origins, though we should anticipate very minimal.

While the Multiverse will be a relevant aspect of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, the majority of the film is probably going to reside in one particular universe. The trailers have centered around Miles Morales and Peter Parker so one of their universes is the main one. Noir Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen, on the other hand, likely only get intros before jumping into the main universe.

Next: Will Spider-Man: Far From Home be a sequel to Venom, too?

The good news is that the home universes of Noir Spidey and Spider-Gwen could be explored in the future. They probably won’t receive feature movies in the Spider-Verse but a sequel where the Spider-Men jump between universes could happen. Of course, we should wait to hear from Sony before speculating on what the future holds.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse opens in theaters on December 14, 2018.
