Wynonna Earp recap: Season 3, Episode 1, Blood Red and Going Down
By Drew Koenig
Wynonna Earp returns with its third season as the gang hunts down an old baddie and new ones roll into town.
Wynonna Earp and the gang are back to ride mechanical bulls and take names. What? Oh, and shoot demonic criminals called revenants that her ancestor Wyatt Earp killed. If that’s what you’re into.
It’s been more than four months (nineteen weeks, as Doc Holliday is quick to remind everyone) since the demon Bulshar rose from his tomb and Wynonna and Doc were forced to send off their newborn daughter, Alice, to live with Aunt Gus so that she won’t be targeted by unsavory sorts. Doc is still not pleased with this and Wynonna has responded by constantly keeping him “training and angry” when they aren’t out hunting down revenants and trying to get info on the whereabouts of Bulshar.
Big trouble is coming, however, as a mega-bus of sorts is pulling into the Ghost River Triangle, met at the border by Sheriff Nedley, and who else climbs off but a group of vampires (because why not vampires). Wynonna, Waverly, and Nicole are then called to a crime scene and met by Nedley, who has well been glamoured at this point into doing the vampire’s bidding. There has been a murder spree at a bar they had just been at the night before while hunting a group of revenants.
Nicole informs that this is the work of the Cult of Bulshar, who she has been looking into ever since Bulshar had come back. Something about the crime scene upsets her and she rushes off to the bathroom with Waverly in tow.
In the bathroom, Waverly is taken off guard by one of the vampires and is also glamoured along with Nicole.

Wynonna finds it odd and decides to go speak to someone who might have some information she could use: Mama Earp. She’s currently, and voluntarily, in a mental institution and would rather not have anything to do with the Earp business, thank you very much.
Wynonna tries to pry some information from the doctors there to no avail until Dolls appears and uses their position as Federal Marshalls to speed things along. The files on her mother aren’t much help, but that’s not nearly as important as the fact that Dolls has been following her.
Elsewhere, Doc is at Shorty’s and finds Jeremy in his basement when a cloud of purple mist comes in. Doc is knocked unconscious while Jeremy is becomes glamoured.
Wynonna returns to the Homestead and finds a vampire in the shed and promptly shoots him. She makes it back to the house and is met by Waverly, Nicole, and Jeremy who finds out that she killed a vampire and knocks her out and shoves her into a coffin for later.
Dolls finds her in the basement of the Gardner house and shows her Black Badge’s protocol on dealing with vampires that he’s never been able to use until now, a fact he seems very excited about. All they need to do is stake the vampires and everyone under their control will go back to normal.
On the mega-bus, which is clearly a stripper bus, Doc awakes handcuffed to a stripper pole and being interrogated by a mysterious woman demanding to know if he is, in fact, John Henry Holliday. To test that theory, she electrocutes him.
Eventually, Doc realizes that he knows her as the Contessa and chases her out of the bus. He shoots at her, mainly just to prove that he can, but ultimately lets her go.
Back at the Gardner home, a party is underway and all of Purgatory is invited. Some of the citizens are being offered up as gifts to Bulshar and others are going to be vampire food. Before any of that can happen, Wynonna and Doc crash through a window and start staking vampires.
Soon, the rest join in, including Jeremy, despite believing that one of them might have actually liked him. Wynonna leaves one of the vampires alive and sends him back to Bulshar to send a message.
At the crime scene again, Dolls brings Nicole food as she’s studying the murders again and informs him that she thinks she may be a survivor of the Cult of Bulshar.
Wynonna and Waverly head back to the Homestead and, pressured by Dolls, Wynonna begins to tell Waverly about Mama when their car crashes and they roll down a hill. Waverly is pulled out of the wreckage by a mystery person with Wynonna still inside.
