Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger season 1, episode 9 recap
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger takes away hopes and heightens fears in it’s penultimate episode. Check out our recap.
Instead of kicking things off with Tandy or Ty, we see Auntie Chantelle (the show previously had her going by Clarisse) writing in chalk and spitting out booze. She’s working on something, we just don’t entirely know what yet. Meanwhile, Evita is listening to the Father’s lecture. Evita later finds her barely walking when she gets home the next morning. She wants Evita to ask Ty about the divine pairing.
Ty and his parents find out that the police are opening an investigation into Ty’s version of events from the night Billy died. He’s upset that their response is basically “thank you” and nothing else. For Tandy, she’s going back to her old tricks, but stealing hopes instead of money and expensive items. Her fun is interrupted when Mina calls.
We see some parallels between Ty and his mom as neither of them can focus on anything and take it out on people who don’t deserve it. Ty goes to see Father Delgado, who tells him that he’s been fighting a war since Billy died and he’s not wrong.
Ivan joins Mina and Tandy for brunch and Tandy’s focus goes in an out, too. Ivan asks her what she’s going to do about Roxxon and then Mina offers her a job there. When she reaches out for Tandy to shake her hand, Tandy sees what she hopes for and she takes away the beautiful flowers to show her how it feels.
We don’t see too much of Detective O’Reilly in the first half of the episode. She’s kicked out of the crime scene and then when we see her again she’s at a bar drinking her sorrows away.

Tandy goes to get Liam out of jail and she spends a lot of time in this episode going back to her old ways (or at least trying to). She even shows Liam where she’s been staying and she even sees the two of them getting married when she touches Liam.
Father Delgado left Ty standing and holding up two books. When he returns, he tells Ty to end the war, but Ty retaliates by saying his speeches don’t mean anything. Ty makes it perfectly clear that he doesn’t believe in God. When he tries to leave, he winds up seeing the Father’s fears instead. Father Delgado was in a terrible accident when he was drunk that killed people, but left him without a scratch.
As Tandy is taking Liam’s hope away, Ty shows up by walking through a door that he saw when Father Delgado had hold of him. It snaps both of them out of the places they’re in and they’ve been drawn together yet again.
We finally get some action with O’Reily when she takes the “Back Breaker” bat off of the wall and clocks Connors with it in the bar. No one even tries to help O’Reilly, probably because they all know about Connors anyway.
Evita goes to Ty to tell him that she can help and just when he’s about to talk to her, Tandy shows up. Evita tries to get her to go away and then realizes who she is. Ty says he doesn’t need her drama and she doesn’t want him in her head. These two know they can’t stop what’s happening between them, but they can’t help but be frustrated by it, too.
Father Delgado’s lecture on regression runs through the episode and correlates to what we’re seeing going on with the characters. It’s a little on the nose, but with this being a teen superhero drama, that sounds about right.
Tandy gets back to the church to look for Liam and the place is trashed. Mina is being chased by two guys who were hit with the energy that gave Ty and Tandy their powers. Detective O’Reilly hears over the radio that the suspect in Officer Fuchs death has been identified.
When Ty gets home, his mom tells him to sit down and lets him ask her whatever he wants. Ty learns that she did listen to him all those years and she kept quiet because they didn’t want him to end up dead like Billy. She’s understandably upset, but he reminds her that she said they could go after him even if he does everything right. She begs him to let it go, but he doesn’t want to. It’s a tough, but touching moment to watch and it’s rudely interrupted by cops.
Ty’s mom tells him to run and just as he’s leaving his house, Tandy arrives to see her mom. However, she sees the hit woman who killed Greg earlier in the season (she also saw her earlier at the police station). The episode ends there and sets us up with a lot of loose ends going into the finale. Will Ty be framed by the cops? Will Tandy lose her mom? What does Detective O’Reilly plan to do? Will Connors get away with everything? It’ll be a long week before we can find out.
