Riverdale: Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes talk Varchie and Bughead dynamic changes

Riverdale stars Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart sit down to discuss Season 3 of The CW’s hit drama and what’s to come for their characters as the season begins!

When we last stepped foot in the fictional town of Riverdale, things were far from good as the lives of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the gang were turned upside down via a wave of unexpected twists.

Archie was hauled off to jail thanks at the hand of Veronica’s father Hiram. Veronica broke free from her parents grasps, setting her sights on beginning a new business venture. Betty found out her father was the serial killer she had been working to track down while Jug was officially crowned as the new leader of the Serpents. Those breadcrumbs left behind in the Season 2 finale are set to lead right into the new season and particularly affect the stories that lie ahead for Veronica and Betty!

"“In Season 3, Veronica will be running Pop’s and her speakeasy and I think it’s a big challenge for her because it’s the first time she’s ever been financially independent,” Camila Mendes teased when we caught up with her at San Diego Comic-Con. “She has to support herself and is working really hard and proving everyone else wrong."

While Veronica is able to throw herself into a new business venture as the season begins using the events of Season 2 as the fire that feels her, Betty will desperately be attempting to forget the past few months.

"“In the beginning of Season 3, you see Betty trying not to deal with [the situation with her father.] She’d rather ignore it and focus on other things rather than deal with the fact that her dad is a serial killer,” Lili Reinhart commented of Betty’s Season 3 state of mind."

Although her family life is in turmoil thanks to her father’s killer ways, at least one of Betty’s relationships is set to be on a better path this season. After a rocky journey and unfortunate breakup, Betty and Jug will get back to their Season 1 roots – which is something all Bughead fans can surely get behind!

"“Moving forward at the start of Season 3, they’re kind of back to their Season 1 ways where they’re being an investigative team,” Reinhart added of what’s to come for Bughead this season. “They definitely tackle the Season 3 mystery head on and dive deep right into it which is fun.”"

Unfortunately, things are much more complicated for the likes of Veronica and Archie thanks to Hiram’s latest betrayal which left Archie in police custody and facing serious jail time.

"“It’s going to challenge them,” Mendes warned of the difficulties facing Varchie this season. “The circumstances make it difficult for Veronica. At the beginning we start off three months into the summer from where we left off and Veronica is really concerned about his fate and is doing the best she can to control the situation to get the best possible outcome. Of course, it’s Riverdale and conflict is everywhere.”"
