Is the Black Hood returning? Will Archie go to jail? Is there another musical episode? Here’s what the cast of Riverdale said about Season 3 at Comic-Con.

When Riverdale returns to spin heads this fall, there will be some changes in play. First of all, let’s not beat around the bush: During the cast’s panel at Comic-Con, the notorious Black Hood wasn’t mentioned once. At least, he wasn’t mentioned as a posing threat for the upcoming third season. With that sigh of relief out of the way, what fresh hell does Season 3 promise for Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead?

Of course, the major relationships of the series won’t have it easy, and neither will the families. After Season 2 put each character through their own specially crafted wringer, they will have a brief reprieve with a much-needed summer of solitude and a simple Labor Day celebration, as teased in the first-look trailer released at Comic-Con. But between cults, new characters, and the SATs, what horrors await in Riverdale Season 3? Here’s five shocking spoilers teased at SDCC.

1. Bughead, Varchie, and Choni will be tested.

More from Comic Con

It wouldn’t be a season of Riverdale if our core ships weren’t thrust into a rocky ocean. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lili Reinhart says Bughead will step back into the role of the crime-solving duo we know and love, but Camila Mendes and KJ Apa couldn’t spin as happy a future for Varchie. With Archie on trial and Veronica taking on a new business venture with her speakeasy, they might not withstand the pressures of young love. Meanwhile, Cheryl and Toni could find themselves as the subject of jealousy from none other than Josie.

2. Archie faces off against a new enemy.

The Riverdale panel at SDCC also included a new casting announcement. Penelope Ann Miller joins the cast in Season 3 as District Attorney Ms. Wright, who’s working with Hiram to convict Archie of murder. Since we know how Archie operates, Ms. Wright’s insistence on using Archie’s past actions against him will secure her the exclusive role as his new enemy. But there’s no way he’s lost sight on bringing down Hiram, even though we should expect Season 3 to lighten things up. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teases the kids will actually be thinking about college and extracurriculars.

3. Jughead’s mom and sister come to town.

Finally, Season 3 will reveal the never seen or heard from Jones matriarch and the youngest of the bunch, Jellybean. Aguirre-Sacasa advised to look out for their arrival around the eight or ninth episode of the season but didn’t offer many details to hold onto. Who will play these key family members and descendants of the South Side? Will they burst into town with pots to stir and hell to pay? Most importantly, what brings them to Riverdale?

4. Polly and Alice join a cult.

Something’s always been up with Polly since day one, and we’re going to fully explore what. Since the first season, Polly has mentioned the mysterious “Farm.” Riverdale loyalists probably picked up on the fact that The Farm wasn’t just a place with open fields and wild animals. As the Season 3 teaser depicts, it’s some kind of cult. Polly and Alice hold Juniper and Dagwood over a bonfire with other members donned in full white garb. Betty can’t catch a break.

5. There’s a flashback episode and another musical.

Did you love Riverdale’s production of Carrie: The Musical? Well, prepare your dancing shoes for another musical episode from the multi-talented cast. While the cast nor the creator spilled what show they would be putting on or when to expect the next musical episode, they did note that Season 3 would feature another genre-bending episode. Also, the season will step out of the narrative with a flashback episode centered on the teen characters playing their parents in high school. Without a doubt, the blast to the past will reveal jaw-dropping secrets about the first generation of Riverdale drama.
