29. The Man Who Would Be King

Supernatural Season 6, Episode 20 opts for a slightly different angle to all the episodes previous on the series. It focuses on a character that isn’t Dean or Sam. Even “Ghostfacers” in Season 3 never quite took the focus from the Winchester brothers in the way this episode did.

The whole story was from Castiel’s point of view. This was his story and there was no doubt about it. The episode starts with Castiel on a bench calling out to God and beginning this journey into who he had become.

While there are moments with Sam, Dean, Crowley, and others, this is an episode from Castiel’s view. We get an understanding of why he is doing what he’s doing. We sense the fear at times and the disappointment at others. There are the confusion and anger. This is an angel who feels abandoned and troubled.

We’ve seen Castiel turn against the Winchesters in the past. He’s done what he’s thought was right and has been manipulated by others. “The Man Who Would Be King” is different. This is an episode where Castiel is the one manipulating himself in a sense. His thoughts are clouding his judgment and encouraging him to make one bad choice after another.

For those who are Castiel fans, this is an instant favorite episode. Those who love to see a story from another’s perspective, this is one of those episodes to tune into again and again, even if Supernatural Season 6 isn’t a favorite.
