28. In My Time of Dying

The second season premiere is certainly a beautifully crafted episode. In fact, the first season finale is awesome. Not many shows would have opted to end a season with a cliffhanger back them. We just have to look at how Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed would wrap the full story up by the end of a season. You know; just in case?

However, Supernatural took the risk and it all paid off. We got the excellent opening that is “In My Time of Dying.” The Supernatural Season 2 premiere worked for all types of reasons. One of those was the way it helped to set up a storyline for the rest of the season. We knew John had done something and made some sort of deal, but with who?

There was also the way Dean learned more about spirits and how they turn into vengeful ones. This was our first glimpse into seeing how anger could help a spirit do something to the physical plane. And Sam was the one willing to open his mind to that his brother was still around.

On top of all that, we got to meet Tessa. There was a chance to delve deeper into the reaper lore, something that was intricately created in the first five seasons and slowly built upon. The last time we’d seen a reaper, he was a shriveled old man. It was easy to believe that Tessa was a ghost and not a reaper at first.

To finish it off, Dean was saved but not in a natural way. Deep down, we all felt the guilt and uncertainty that Dean felt and we knew it was setting things up for the future.
