After the excruciating Supernatural Season 1 finale, the show returned to continue the story.

The Winchesters were left fighting for their lives in the Supernatural Season 1 finale. A demon-possessed truck driver crashed into the Impala, as Sam tried to get his brother to the hospital. The second season picked up with “In My Time of Dying,” right where the first left off and would be the episode John would share his secret about Sammy.

It all started with the aftermath of the crash. As the demon-possessed truck driver opened the driver door to the Impala, a conscious but injured Sam Winchester pointed the Colt at him. The demon chose against attacking, knowing he would likely die, giving the Winchesters a chance to recover at the hospital.

Dean realizes the worst

When Dean wakes alone in his hospital room, he decides to look around the hospital for his father and brother. As people ignore him, Dean comes to the realization that he’s a spirit. Sure enough, Sam is in Dean’s hospital room as Dean lies comatose, hooked up to machines. It doesn’t look like Dean will survive this.

Dean attempts to make contact with his psychic brother, but it’s only when he gets angry at his brother and father for arguing that he is able to smash a glass. It’s a sign for Sam that Dean is there.

John needs a favor from Bobby

Meanwhile, John is stuck in another hospital bed. Sam has to go between the two elder Winchesters in his life, as he’s the only one walking. John has a favor. He needs some ingredients from Bobby. It turns out that the ingredients are for summoning demons. Sam isn’t happy, but Bobby gets them anyway.

The two also assess the damage to the car. It’s a complete write-off, but Sam makes it clear that Dean will rebuild Baby with just one working piece. Bobby needs to salvage it.

A reaper appears

As Dean’s heart stops, Dean’s spirit sees an apparition above his body. He forces the apparition away, allowing the doctors to get Dean’s heart beating again. It takes a code blue of another patient for Dean to realize the apparition is a reaper, preserving the natural order. That means a reaper is after him.

When Sam returns to the hospital with a Ouija board, Dean is able to get in touch with Sam. Dean warns him that there’s a reaper about, while also answering a few yes/no questions. Sam rushes to John’s room to give him the news, but John has already gone. The younger Winchester brother needs to handle this himself, which is when he starts researching reaper lore. Dean sees something that catches his attention.

Dean had met a spirit, Tessa, wandering around the hospital halls. It turns out she was the reaper and wants Dean to crossover with her. If Dean stays, he will become the thing the Winchesters hunt.

John summons a demon

While Dean makes one choice, John makes another. He summons the Yellow-Eyed Demon with a deal: take John instead of Dean. John also reveals that he knows all about YED’s plans for Sammy, but he’s definitely not there to kill Yellow-Eyes. There’s on condition John has: he wants time to see his boys again. Yellow-Eyes has his own conditions.

Just as Dean is agreeing to leave with Tessa, she’s possessed by the Yellow-Eyed Demon. Dean is returned to his body, with no memory of being a spirit. John and Sam are both there, happy but also exhausted. John wants the fighting to stop and some coffee, meaning Sam leaves the room. It’s the perfect time for John to share just how proud he is of Dean and whisper a secret about Sammy.

John leaves, with the offer of the Colt, just as Yellow-Eyes wanted. By the time Sam returns to John, it’s too late. John has collapsed. Sam and Dean watch as the doctor’s fail to revive John.
