Fall is fast approaching, which means the summer movie season is coming to a close!

September is not only the month for back to school, but also the movie period where the blockbusters start slowing down, and the more serious Award show movies are released. This month sees some interesting and engaging movies that range from adult orientated action to family friendly entertainers.

Let’s check out the 5 most interesting movies that are closing out the summer…

The Predator

After a supporting role in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger starring Predator, now critically acclaimed writer-director Shane Black releases his own version of the sci-fi action epic; The Predator this month.

More from Movies

It is a franchise that has been sequelized, crossed over, and even prequelized, to mixed reactions by audiences and critics alike. While the first two films were decent, crossing the Predators with Aliens was kind of a hot mess that you couldn’t take your eyes off of. And while Aliens is experiencing a resurgence with original director Ridley Scott returning, maybe it’s the Predators’ time now.

Director Shane Black amasses a cast of newcomers, veterans and just recognizable faces from all walks of the industry in The Predator, and the trailers of the new movie look… okay. Nothing really jumps out at me from The Predator marketing besides Shane Black’s name, which is really the only reason my excitement for this film even exists at this point.

It’s a lot of goodwill being given to a director who has not disappointed, and given his close interest in The Predator franchise, here’s hoping that his passion will translate to an engaging and innovative Predator movie that we haven’t seen yet. And more so than anything else, this movie promises to deliver that, at least!

The House With A Clock On Its Walls

After Goosebumps, Jack Black continues his exploration into family friendly movies with Eli Roth’s (of all people!) The House With The Clock In The Wall.

I’m absolutely loving this toned down, yet immensely entertaining Jack Black whose performance is based on actual acting, and not shock tactics. But what’s surprising here is a kid’s movie directed by Eli Roth.

Known more for his R-Rated slashers and thrillers, it’s strange to hear about him doing a family friendly flick. The trailer for The House With A Clock On Its Walls looks interesting enough to be worth a look. Also of note that the movie was written by Eric Kripke, creator of Supernatural and Timeless TV series.

While the story of the movie seems to retread a lot of Harry Potter-esque elements, it still seems fun and innocent enough to be enjoyed. And if Cate Blanchet said yes, then there’s got to be something about this movie that must be worth watching.

Life Itself

The creator of the highly successful emotion-porn TV series This Is Us, is seemingly bringing that brand of non-linear storytelling to the big screen in Amazon Studios’ Life Itself.

The movie, featuring a couple in Oscar Isaac and Olivia Wilde, looks like it’s got a similar approach to writer-director Dan Fogelman’s hit NBC series, as it intersects the lives of multiple characters through different time periods, all relevant to life lessons that the couple learns along the way.

The trailer, like the show, invokes tears through the amazing performances of its diverse cast and out of context dialogue. It should be interesting to note just how much of the weight of that kind of storytelling across months of TV, translates into hours of a movie.

The cast of Life Itself is one that’s quite envious, featuring Antonio Banderas, Annette Benning, Mandy Patinkin and many other recognizable faces which makes the movie one to watch out for this month.

The Sisters Brothers

Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly team up in a Western that looks to be quirky and fun in The Sisters Brothers, by an award winning director, based on a book.

A gold prospector with an innovative means of discovering gold is chased by two assassins; one of whom is having an identity crisis about the line of work that he`s chosen. While looking like the typical action Western with guns blazing and characters with loose morals, The Sisters Brothers looks more like a dark comedy than anything else.

The majority of the jokes come from Phoenix himself, who looks to be in top notch form in this one. Having spent a few years in odd-ball dramas, Phoenix looks like he cleaned up for a more physically demanding role, with elements of physical comedy included for good measure. Reilly is always amazing in his comedic roles, so it`s great to see him be more restraint playing the straight man to Phoenix`s rogue.

The Sisters Brothers looks like it could be a fun and hilarious ride into the Western genre with interesting characters and a premise that`s worth a look. And the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed round out the cast, doesn`t hurt one bit.

Smallfoot

The animated movie of this month looks to be a innovative spin on an existing urban myth, with a stat studded voice cast, Smallfoot.

The urban legend of Bigfoot is something that’s fascinated adventurers, scientists and the human race as a whole for decades. To the point where there are reality shows dedicated to the search of the mysterious creature. Bigfoot has even spawned live-action movies of various genres such as the iconic classic, Harry And The Hendersons.

This new animated film takes the elusive concept of Bigfoot, but instead gives us a snowy world populated by a variety of these monsters. And one in particular is considered an outcast, because of his belief of another type of creature, that he calls Smallfoot (humans).

dark. Next. 5 Movies to watch on Netflix in September

It’s basically the opposite of the Bigfoot legends, but one that looks kind of hilarious. What if we were just as much of a myth to a race of Bigfeet (?) as they are to us?

The movie features a massive cast from Channing Tatum to Zendaya and even James Corden as the elusive human. Definitely a worthy summer addition for back to school.
