Season 1 – Murder House

Moira O’Hara (Frances Conroy/Alexandra Breckenridge)

Moira was the housekeeper for the Harmon family and later revealed to be one of the ghosts trapped in the house. The character had a pretty tragic backstory as the season explained how she was killed after Constance thought her husband was cheating on her with Moira. In reality, the husband wouldn’t stop making unwanted advances on Moira but she too fell victim to Constance’s rage. Since then, Moira had a vendetta against men and appeared as a young, attractive woman in their presence to prove their compulsive behavior.

What made her stand out from the other spirits in the house was her loyalty and compassion towards Vivien. While Vivien dealt with her husband’s infidelity and her feeling that she was going insane inside the house, Moira was always there for encouragement. Moira truly cared for Vivien’s well-being and even eventually got Ben to see more clearly. Even though all of the Harmons eventually met their demise, things could have been much worse if not for Moira.

Nora Montgomery (Lily Rabe)

Out of all the ghosts within the house, Nora was one of the most interesting. As one of the original owners of the infamous house, she suffered greatly during her life within those walls. The lack of income resulted in marital problems between her and her doctor husband.

To make up for the lost wealth, the Montgomery couple set up an illegal side business for women to get secret abortions. An angry boyfriend of one of the women didn’t agree with the practice so he kidnapped and killed their infant child. Broken and in despair regarding her family, Nora decided to shoot her husband and herself.

Since Nora died in the house, she made a few appearances after the Harmons moved in. With her head wound, Nora wandered the house confused about her whereabouts. She still had a great sadness from the tragic events involving her son. Her complexities as a broken character were on display but they were never fully developed. Nora might not have had an admirable personality during her time on earth but that didn’t mean she deserved such a tragic afterlife.
