Season 2 – Asylum

Pepper (Naomi Grossman)

Pepper is one of the most beloved characters in American Horror Story history. Many people forget that she was the first character to appear in more than one season making her highly underrated. Pepper’s backstory was focused on in Freak Show when it was explained how she was one of Elsa’s freaks. At one point Elsa sends Pepper away to live with her sister, Rita. After Rita has a child, Pepper is suspected of killing the child which was actually done by the hands of Rita’s own husband.

Wrongfully accused, Pepper was sent to Briarcliff. Out of everyone, Pepper might have had the most amount of pure innocence within her. She was always doubted because of her mental condition and physical appearance. After Pepper was abducted by aliens, she returned with a genius level of intelligence and proved her innocence. She also got the opportunity to jab Dr. Arden by revealing how much a joke he is to the aliens. Sadly, Pepper never got to leave Briarcliff but found a friend in Jude before passing away from an illness years later.

Mother Superior Claudia (Barbara Tarbuck)

Mother Claudia was one of, if not the only, true good souls who worked within the walls of Briarcliff. She was a mentor and ally to Sister Jude and even tried to help her get her job back after being committed to the asylum. Mother Claudia’s biggest move came when she helped Lana escape the asylum because she too wanted to expose the institution’s mistreatments and wrongdoings. If Mother Claudia didn’t help Lana, she may have never left the sinister confines of that evil place.
