Season 5: ‘I rebelled for this?’

Supernatural Season 5, Episode 18 was a landmark episode. It was the 100th episode of the series, a milestone for any show. Who would have thought we’d be writing this for Castiel’s 10th anniversary and coming up to the 300th episode.

Anyway, Episode 18, titled “The Point of No Return,” saw Dean contemplate saying “yes” to Michael. Again, what a moment to look back at this point when we’re going into a season with Dean controlled by Michael.

During this episode, Castiel decides to pull Dean aside. After beating Dean to a pulp, Castiel holds him up against the wall and says “I rebelled for this? For you to surrender to them?”

Sure enough, Castiel had rebelled. He’d turned against the angels to prevent the apocalypse, knowing that it would be destruction of the world. Even this early on, he never wanted anything to happen to humans, knowing them as the amazing creation that God made.

There is a close second moment in this episode alone, and it continues the rebellion line. When the Winchesters go to save Adam, angels start attacking them. Castiel uses the angel banishing sigil to banish the group of angels, banishing himself at the same time. It’s a sacrifice yet again for the Winchesters and marks the journey that the trio would forever go on in Supernatural.

However, “I rebelled for this” marks the best moment from Supernatural Season 5. The emotion was raw. Castiel was angry and scared, feeling emotions he probably didn’t know he could feel.
