The original RoboCop most certainly had its fair share of blood and gore, but an X-rated director’s cut now available on Amazon Prime reveals even more violence that was removed from the iconic film before its release.

Director Paul Verhoeven struggled with getting the version of RoboCop he truly wanted on-screen for some time, eventually agreeing to cut out some of the more violent aspects in order to get the originally applied X-rated label reduced to just R. In fact, a total of 11 attempts were made before the MPAA were finally satisfied with the film’s content and believed it suitable for a mature adult audience.

There are several scenes in this film which had even the biggest action film fans looking away due to just how graphic they were. The main one, stuck in most viewers’ minds forever, is the moment Peter Murphy is brutally murdered by notorious criminal Clarence Boddicker and his gang of equally violent followers. The police officer’s hand is blown off as these villains laugh and make jokes, with their ringleader going on to shoot off Murphy’s arm. the group watches the cop suffer horrifically until ultimately shooting him in the head, as his terrified partner looks on unable to help him.

The 1987 release also boasts some amount of dark comedy when it comes to one of the experimental new artificially intelligent law enforcement officials killing one of the board members. The robot, after shooting as many people in the room as it can, ends up having its head shrunk down to a tiny skull before ultimately taking its own life with a gun.

The 2014 reboot of RoboCop, commonly referred to as RoboCop 4, was not very successful. Many fans felt it strayed too far from what the original film that had made its mark in the industry as an unforgettable, yet not overdone, cult movie.

Verhoeven himself admitted that the new installment was in effect forced to be much more serious and allegedly realistic than the 1987 release had ever set out to be, therefore ruining the appeal of the film entirely.
