How to watch the Black-ish season 5 premiere live online
Tonight, Black-ish kicks off its fifth season. We’ll get you prepared for what to expect from the Johnson’s and let you know where you can watch online.
When we last left the Johnson’s, they had been through their toughest period and come out of the other side. After contemplating divorce and getting as far as Dre moving out of the home, the Johnson’s ended up deciding to stay together. Unfortunately, it took the tragic death of Bow’s father, Paul (Beau Bridges), to bring them back together and that will be a bit of an adjustment for the show. The last four episodes of season 4 were controversial but many fans did appreciate the serious turn.
Another major family milestone occurred last season as well. Junior picked his college. After an episode that felt like it slighted HBCU’s, Junior actually decided to attend his father’s alma mater, Howard University. That is where our show will pick up.
Season 5 Premiere: “Gap Year”

The episode will begin as Bow and Dre are dropping off their second child at college. Howard is on the East coast so they will have traveled across the country to do so. However, after making this trip and having this sendoff, they find Junior back at the house. Announcing that he’s taking a gap year (hence the episode title).
No doubt Bow and Dre will have conflicting opinions about their son’s decision and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. When Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey, went to college she got her own spin-off Grown-ish. With no such plan seemingly in the works, it would make sense for Junior to end up back at home rather than across the country. It would be hard to keep him as a part of the show.
The secondary storyline will follow the twins, as they, again, contemplate moving into separate rooms. Though they ended up back together last time, they will likely make the move this time considering they’re a bit older.
We’ll have to see how it all plays out. Will Junior be forced to go back to school, or will he be allowed to remain at home? And will the twins finally branch out on their own?
