ABC has handed four shows three more episodes each. There’s still time for more episodes to be ordered. Which shows have got the extra episode treatment and why only three each?

ABC has given out three more episodes to each of four shows on the network. Three of those shows are freshman series, but the other is a sophomore series. There’s still time to offer more episodes if the ratings hold steady or get a boost.

The RookieA Million Little Things, and The Kids Are Alright are the three freshman shows getting three extra episodes each. They were all given 13-episode season orders to begin with, which is standard for a first season. The networks want to see how the shows perform before giving them the full season.

Splitting Up Together is the sophomore series to get the three extra episodes. Like the freshman shows, it was initially handed a 13-episode season to see how well it performed this year.

The three episodes for each of the shows take them to 16-episode season orders. This could be considered a full season, as many shows are starting to move to shorter seasons. There are various benefits to this, including the ability to add more programming in throughout the year. However, there’s another benefit: ABC has a little more time to decide on what to do in the future.

Some sort of decision had to be made for the shows for the writers. By ordering three more episodes, there is some time to decide whether to order more episodes as the writers will need a few weeks to put these episodes together and filming will need to take place. It suggests that ratings aren’t quite good enough but ABC is still hopeful about the shows.
