Original Release Date: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past debuted on May 1, 2009 just in time to beat the pre-summer rush of blockbusters.
Box Office Earnings: The film took the No. 2 spot at the box office on its opening weekend, coming in with $15.4 million behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s $85.1 million bow. As a whole, the rom-com brought in over $55 million in the United States and $47 million at the foreign box office for a worldwide total of $102.2 million against a $37.5 million budget.

Critical Acclaim: As you might have guessed, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past struggled to wow the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film maintains a 26% rating, which confirms the unfortunate reality that critics often dismiss romantic comedies. But in the court of public opinion, the Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner starrer is a winner.
About the Role: Emma Stone plays Allison Vandermeersh, the ghost of girlfriends past, in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Connor Mead (McConaughey) dated Allison in high school, and she materializes in ghost form to help Connor explore his past. In full ’80s garb and a mouthful of braces, Allison takes Connor through what went wrong with Jenny (Garner) and how he can change in the future.
Simply the Best: Even though Stone played a small supporting role, there’s truly no such thing as small parts. She steals the show as the ghost, hitting all of the comedic beats and elevating them much higher than the rest of the film’s funny moments. Stone was simply unforgettable in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and this was the role that signaled that she was destined for much more than supporting roles as the comic relief.
