25 best Christmas movies countdown #18: A Charlie Brown Christmas
Hidden Remote’s countdown of the 25 best Christmas movies continues with a holiday classic that isn’t technically a movie, but A Charlie Brown Christmas has been a holiday staple for over five decades, earning it a place on anybody’s list.
A Charlie Brown Christmas has made it to the list at #18. Technically not a movie, it debuted on CBS on Dec. 9, 1965, and was broadcast yearly on the network until 2005 when ABC acquired the rights.
The animated special features characters from Charles M. Schultz’s popular Peanuts comic strip. The voice cast includes Peter Robbins (Charlie Brown), Tracy Stratford (Lucy), Bill Melendez (Snoopy), Cathy Steinberg (Sally) and Chris Shea (Linus). A Charlie Brown Christmas won a 1966 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program as well as a Peabody Award.

A hapless Charlie Brown has the blues. Christmas is right around the corner, and he’s disillusioned by the commercialism surrounding the holiday. Charlie Brown can’t figure out what’s got him so down in the dumps, and Lucy suggests he direct the annual holiday pageant.
One of the most iconic elements of A Charlie Brown Christmas is the soundtrack. It mixes a jazz score by pianist Vincent Guaraldi mixed with traditional Christmas carols such as “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “Jingle Bells.”
Like Charlie’s tree, the beauty of A Charlie Brown Christmas is in its simplicity: children ice skating, throwing snowballs, dancing and catching snowflakes on their tongues. And one young boy who finds the true meaning of Christmas.
