Every time a bell rings…I’m sure the rest of you can finish that sentence for me. It’s a Wonderful Life snags the #9 spot on the 25 best Christmas movies countdown.

There’s nothing more perfect for Christmas than a good old-fashioned Christmas movie. And that’s exactly what I believe It’s a Wonderful Life is. Personally, I think that it should be ranked much higher than #9, but this is a ranking of all Hidden Remote’s writers favorite Christmas movies and some haven’t even seen this one. (I know, right?)

It’s a Wonderful Life tells the beautiful tale of George Bailey, a banker who starts to think about ending his life. His business has no money to pay out to his customers and he thinks his family is worse off without him. An angel, Clarence, shows up to prevent him from jumping to his death, by showing him what life would have been like without George being born.

It’s easy for us to forget the impact we make on people. The genius of this movie isn’t a look at how other people would feel after someone commits suicide but on the things George has done over the years, pointing out how small things (and some large things) changed everything, including saving his brother’s life.

Directed and produced by Frank Capra, the 1946 movie stars James Stewart, Donna Reed, and Henry Travers. It’s now available as a remastered version in color, but my personal favorite is always going to be the black-and-white version.

It’s a Wonderful Life was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. Unfortunately, it didn’t win either, but it’s still an honor to be nominated. It did more than double it’s $3.1 million budget, bringing in $7.2 million gross in the United States. It’s worth remembering that the movie came out a year after the end of World War II, so this is a financial success for the time.

Then there’s the critical success. Even to this day, Rotten Tomatoes shows that critics and audiences love it alike with a 93% and 95% score respectively. It’s certainly one for the ages.
