Vikings ending after six seasons: What’s next for Michael Hirst and co.?
HISTORY’s Vikings is coming to an end after six seasons. However, this isn’t the end of the saga if Michael Hirst has anything to say.
Vikings may only just be airing the second half of Season 5, but Season 6 is already in the works. HISTORY has now confirmed that the 20-episode sixth season will be the last. However, this doesn’t’ sound like it will be the end for the saga.
Michael Hirst, the creator, showrunner, and sole writer for the series, is already looking at the future. Because Vikings is based on real historical figures it was always going to have a finite end. Initially, based on Ragnar Lothbrok’s adventures, Season 4 saw it move onto being about the Sons of Ragnar, which is what the show is now about.

The most recent episode saw Bjorn finally decide to take Kattegat back from Ivar. This is going to be the focus for the next few episodes, as we round out the fifth season. The Season 5 finale is set to air on Jan. 30 with no date yet confirmed for Season 6’s premiere, although this is likely to be around the end of November 2019.
Deadline confirms that the Vikings saga isn’t quite open. Hirst is looking at a new series that will continue to Vikings saga. Interestingly, it hasn’t been called a spin-off. Does that mean it’s going to focus on a character we’ve already come to know or will it be about someone else within the world of the Vikings?
This certainly isn’t the end for Hirst. The creator of The Tudors and co-creator of Camalot is already working on his next historical fiction series. He’s working with Martin Scorsese on a series about Ancient Rome, which is set to air on MGM’s Epix.
If HISTORY continues a similar schedule as Season 5 has had, we could see the series finale airing in 2021. However, the production is already working on Season 6, which could help to keep all 20 episodes of the final season airing throughout 2019 and 2020.
