Deadly Class premieres next week. Benedict Wong plays Master Lin and it’s time to find out more about the character.

Deadly Class is the latest graphic novel adaptation. Benedict Wong is best known for his role in Doctor Strange and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, but now he’s taking on the role of master manipulator Master Lin, head of Kings Dominion.

During New York Comic-Con 2018 in October, I had the chance to interview Wong exclusively about the series and his role. He’s certainly excited for fans to see it and here’s everything he had to say.

More from Syfy

Hidden Remote: So, I’ll start with an easy one. How much of the graphic novels did you read before filming?

Benedict Wong: Pretty much all of them that they gave me. I just entered into that world of it and it was great to absorb all of that. But now, I just get more into the scripts that Rick [Remender] is transitioning from graphic novel to the show.

HR: Are there changes between the two?

Wong: Some. Sometimes with comic book styles, there’s a lot of exposition to write and that has to come out of the script. You don’t want too much “and now I do this…and now I’m feeling this.” I think they’re really just growing the characters that is rarely seen in the graphic novels.

I think what Rick and Miles [Orion Feldsott] are now doing is looking at who is Lin and the legacy of his family.

HR: That goes into my next question. We see a lot of the teens, but not the adults, the teachers, the leaders so much. Will we get more backstory for Lin?

Wong: Yeah, we will.

HR: How much influence does he have over these kids moving forward?

Wong: A lot of influence. He’s a master manipulator and what sort of causes he’s for.

It’s like this onion. I just see peeling it and letting it unfurl. It’s really difficult. There’s so much I want to tell you! And it was amazing watching the episode. It’s the first we’ve seen it and seeing it cranked up, with the audience. I loved it!

What’s amazing about having Rick as the backbone of the series, there’s not going to be any kickback. There’s no “but it’s not like the comic book.” He is the spine and he’s allowing room to grow. I think the comic book fans will enjoy this.

I also thought his choices of music were great. There are certain lyrics that suit a scene. It’s going to be a warm fuzzy, nostalgic feeling for people in their 40s and 50s, grabbing their kids, saying “that was me.”

HR: Master Lin has brought Marcus into [Kings Dominion]. I know you can’t tell me everything, how much does he know about the truth of Marcus’ story?

Wong: Oh, that will unfold further down the line. Nothing escapes Master Lin. He’ll soon find out.
