Black Widow movie may be an R-rated flick. If so, it’ll be the first Marvel Studios R-rated film.

Black Widow, which will be a solo movie projected to debut in 2020 (no official date), has reportedly been involved in talks regarding its rating. Of course, Deadpool was Fox’s first R-rated character, even though he is a Marvel Comics character. But according to Charles Murphy of The Hash Tag Show in a tweet, there have been considerations to make the solo flick R-rated.

Murphy has made reports regarding the Black Widow MCU project, including his first announcement, via his article on Marvel Exchange. A source reportedly said that Marvel Studios will be indeed working on Black Widow.

There was no official announcement. This was back in Dec. 2017. Cate Shortland is set to direct and other crew members join the ensemble.

Then back in Oct. 2018, Murphy said that it would be in the year 2020 slate of Marvel movies in a Hash Tag Show article. Back then he said that “they were told” that Black Widow would be released on May 1, 2020, along with The Eternals on Nov. 6, 2020.

Marvel Studios did say they’d put out three movies a year but with Guardians 3 delayed, who knows what the third movie will be in 2020 if any. The third Guardians flick was supposed to go into production in 2019, but due to the James Gunn Twitter situation, that’s been tabled for now. Now The Hash Tag Show correspondent tweeted the talks on the likelihood of a rated R Black Widow movie.

Remember, Bob Iger made mention of  “an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand” per a report via The Hollywood Reporter back in Dec. 2017. There had been concern with the Disney-Fox merger that Marvel Studios would not go to an R rating ever again after Deadpool.

But with the Hash Tag Show reported story, Iger’s mention of a Marvel-R brand would introduce even Marvel Studios characters into a possible R-rated project. Fans were pretty delighted on Iger’s statement.

I tend to think of the Marvel-R brand to be similar to the Marvel Max series associated with the comics. Don’t forget, Greg Rucka participated in a series of Black Widow Max comics, so I wouldn’t put it past Marvel Studios to follow suit.

What do you think? Can you see Black Widow being R-rated? A Red Sparrow-like theme comes to mind, wouldn’t you say? Can you think of any other characters that deserve the Marvel-R brand? Other than The Punisher of course.

Black Widow will reportedly be released in 2020.
