Vikings recap: Lagatha’s fate revealed, Hvitserk finds his Buddha
Vikings Season 5, Episode 18 brought us some surprising twists and turns. As Bjorn got married, we learned what happened to Lagatha and got flashbacks that we didn’t realize we desperately needed.
One of the big questions last week was what had happened to Lagatha after the battle. Vikings Season 5, Episode 18 answered the questions, while bringing us flashbacks that we’ve needed for a long time. Meanwhile, Hvitserk started his journey and Ivar learned he can’t necessarily rule with fear.
If that wasn’t enough, Ubbe and Torvi started their battle against the Danes, while Floki tried to move forward from the death and devastation in the last episode. Here’s everything that happened in “Baldur.”

Harald struggles with the support for Bjorn
A truce between Bjorn and Harald was never going to work. Did we really think that it could? With Harald so focused on becoming the king of all Norway, he was never going to be able to side with someone who had so much loyalty and love.
That becomes clear at Bjorn’s wedding. Harald is jealous. Not only does Bjorn have support, but now the woman who said she wanted to become queen. Of course, Gunnhild points out that she never said who would be her king.
Ubbe and Torvi face the Danes
Leading Alfred’s troops, Ubbe decides to take the fight to the Black Danes. They allow him and Torvi through to talk to their leader, and it’s immediately clear that they know Ubbe as Ubbe, Ragnar’s son. The Danes take the two to their three kings.
Ubbe and Torvi explain why they have allied with Alfred. Ubbe wants the Danes to do the same to gain land. Two of the kings agree but one doesn’t, so Ubbe decides to face him in single combat. We’ll check up on that next week.

Ivar struggles with support
Back in Kattegat, things aren’t going great for Ivar. We open to him racing through the streets to his statue. It’s been sliced in half from head to toe. It doesn’t take long for Ivar to figure out who did it.
This can’t stand. He heads straight to the people responsible and it looks like he’s going to understand their actions. After all, they did have more freedom with Ragnar as king. They even had more with Lagatha. Ivar is a tyrant.
Of course, that’s not the way things can go. Ivar won’t allow people to deface his statue, so he sends his army. The whole village is burned, with the people burned alive.
If that wasn’t enough bad luck for Ivar, his son is born. While that should be joyous news, the baby is deformed. Freydis tries to tell him that deformities are an honor from the gods, but he clearly doesn’t believe that.
He is also disappointed because his son will always remind him of his own weaknesses. Ivar refuses to let his son suffer as he has done all his life. Taking the baby out to the woods, Ivar leaves it there to die. There is a flash of regret as the baby cries, but Ivar doesn’t turn back.
Hvitserk finds his Buddha, Floki finds his gods
In the last episode, Hvitserk learned about the Buddha. After being cast out of Kattegat and sent on a mission by Ivar, Hvitserk decides its time to make his own alliances. While seeing Olaf, he manages to secure an alliance to attack Ivar. Now Ivar has two brothers after him.
As for Floki, he’s now struggling with his faith. He doesn’t want to stop believing in the gods though, and makes it clear that he will go to the depths of the Earth to find them. And so he does. Walking through Iceland, he comes across a tunnel of flies and that’s where we leave him.
Judith finds Lagatha
One of the biggest questions from last week was where Lagatha was. She couldn’t be dead and we didn’t see her captured, so what could have possibly happened?
While Judith is seeing a healer, she finds out there’s a mad woman living there. Rather than leave like the healer asks, Judith checks on who the mad woman is. Sure enough, it’s Lagatha, dirty and crazy.
Judith gets Lagatha back to the palace, where we get a series of flashbacks. Lagatha sees Ragnar’s death and we get the reminder of the time they were both happy and in love. After that, Lagatha snaps out of her madness, but she isn’t the Lagatha we have known for so long. She’s no longer the shieldmaiden she always was.
This also gives us the chance to find out what’s wrong with Judith. She has found a lump in her breast and is sure that means death. It looks like Judith has breast cancer and this will be her end.
No shocking deaths this week. No major twists but it’s clear with two episodes left, there’s everything to play for.
Will Ubbe die at the hands of a Danish king? Will Ivar change his mind? What’s in store for Judith and Lagatha? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
