A Discovery of Witches is now available on Sundance Now and Shudder. All eight episodes are out, but let’s just look at the series premiere. Here are the five best moments from the episode.

The “All Souls Trilogy” from Deborah Harkness is one of the best supernatural romance stories out there. It’s much more than a love story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont. This is a well-researched, beautiful tale of supernatural forces, intrigue, and danger. Now it’s been turned into a TV series, A Discovery of Witches.

Already renewed for the second and third seasons in the UK, the show has finally become available for people in North America to watch. The first season is out on Sundance Now and Shudder in full.

1. Getting rid of the stereotypes

One thing Harkness does well with the novels is that the things you think you know about demons, vampires, and witches are completely thrown out. Sure, there are some events from history used or some of the myths and legends around the creatures, but not all of the standard ones.

Throughout the series, you’ll learn more of what’s been used and what hasn’t. In the pilot episode, though, there are just hints of getting rid of the stereotypes.

For example, Matthew is introduced in a church, praying with a rosary. It’s clear that he believes in something. He’s searching for his own answers about the problems that are happening to the supernatural beings, but not in the most traditional sense.

If you think we’re going to constantly be in the dark because of the use of vampires, that’s definitely not the case. Vampires can walk around in the daylight (and no, they don’t sparkle!). So before you start, you’ll want to forget all about the myths and legends that you’ve heard and just allow yourself to be immersed into the world Harkness has created.
