Supergirl returns from hiatus with a crisis of identity for Kara and a big sacrifice for Alex. We break down the 5 biggest moments from the episode.

Supergirl’s return picks up with Kara’s struggle to keep her identity secret at the expense of her job at the DEO and brings a heartbreaking choice for Alex. Let’s discuss the 5 biggest moments that happened in the show’s winter premiere.

Alex’s heartbreaking sacrifice

When Colonel Haley brings a truth-seeking alien to the DEO with the sole purpose of determining Supergirl’s true identity Alex has to make a difficult choice to protect her sister. She asks J’onn to erase her mind of any memory that Kara is Supergirl. Kara protests, but Alex insists it’s the only way to be sure Kara’s secret is safe, and she’ll do anything to protect her sister. And it won’t just be Alex, everyone at the DEO who knows Kara’s secret agree to have their mind wiped.

It’s one of the best acted moments from the episode and reminds us that the Danvers sisters are always the heart of the show.

More from CW

Next week will delve into the consequences of Alex’s choice so it will be interesting to see how she connects to Kara with a big Supergirl sized secret between them. Will Alex even know Kara is an alien? Since so much of her identity has been centered around protecting Kara, what kind of person would Alex be without that? We’ll soon find out.

Nia gets one step closer to Dreamer

After Brainy and Nia go on a non-date (Oh Brainy) Brainy approaches her about potentially joining Supergirl as the hero Dreamer. Nia is resistant but Brainy leaves her with a binder full of potential suit ideas and at the end of the episode we see Nia flipping through it, indicating she might be getting closer to accepting her powers and destiny.

She’s not fully ready yet though and I suspect we will find out more about why she’s so hesitant very soon since an upcoming episode will have Nia returning home to visit her family.

Lena asks for help

Lena and James have had tension in their relationship ever since he found out she went behind his back to help his case. This episode finds them making amends as they both apologize and come clean. Lena opens up about the experiments she’s conducting and asks for James’ help and support, which he gives. After all, even a billionaire genius needs some support and a moral sounding board every once in a while.

J’onn begins his P.I. business

J’onn has been looking for a way to help people while honoring his father’s teachings and he finally found it. J’onn is now officially a P.I. and open for business. This will be his way to help people without engaging in violence, and good for him for finding his path. His first client was Brainy, asking him to help Supergirl, but of course J’onn wouldn’t take his money and offers to help Supergirl any time she asks. That’s what you do for the people you care about.

Colonel Haley learns Kara’s secret

Colonel Haley is furious that she can’t keep Supergirl under control and is determined to learn who she is. The members of the DEO who know the truth vow to keep Kara’s secret but unfortunately one of them can’t withstand the interrogation and reveals the truth.

When Colonel Haley is attacked by aliens called Morae, aliens she experimented on and trained as assassins, it is up to Kara to save her from her own mess. However despite Kara saving her life the Colonel still threatens to use her identity against her and against everyone she loves.

Threats against her sister are too much for Alex, so Alex punches the Colonel and knocks her out (can you really blame her?). Alex and Kara ask J’onn to wipe the Colonel’s mind, even though that goes against his beliefs of non-violence, and because he loves them J’onn agrees. Unfortunately wiping Colonel Haley’s mind of the knowledge of Kara’s identity won’t stop her desire to figure it out.
