There are tons of cartoons on television these days and sometimes the best ones get skipped by mistake. Here are three you shouldn’t miss.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a kid, a teenager, an adult, or even a senior citizen, cartoons are forever. Animation is an incredible style of storytelling, one that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves or is viewed as a “lesser” medium.

But there are a lot of cartoons out there, ranging from the older ones we grew up with to the long-runners like Spongebob and The Simpsons, to the newcomers or the ones looming on the horizon. With the sheer volume of animation out there, it can be easy to miss a few gems. I’ve compiled a list of three of my favorites I think everyone should check out at least once.

1. Star vs. the Forces of Evil

Following the adventures of Star Butterfly and Marco Diaz, Star vs. the Forces of Evil is a hilarious, heartfelt, fantastically colorful adventure series that will certainly fill the void left by Adventure Time.

Although personally, I think the style of animation and the sophistication of the humor is more in-tune with Gravity Falls than with Adventure Time (you won’t find much, if any, bathroom humor on this show). But I think anyone who was drawn in by the more serious, long-term plots and in-depth mythology of Adventure Time (or Gravity Falls for that matter) will be more than satisfied by what presents in Star.

More from Disney Plus

Star is a princess on a planet known as Mewni, but when she becomes a handful to her parents she is sentence to Earth to learn how to behave. But she is able to take her magic wand with her and thus her time with Marco is marked by inter-dimensional chaos, wild eccentric visits from otherworldly beings, and plenty of world-saving in the process.

If you like a little darkness in your cartoons, as I do, then you’ll definitely be pleased with some of the more adult-oriented storylines on the show. Even though the animation presents as an eye-popping land of wonder, it is more than capable of switching its tone to horrifying when the moment calls for it. When you’re dealing with a world where monsters exist, anything is possible.

The only bad thing about Star vs. the Forces of Evil is there is only one season remaining. It will premiere on Disney Channel, March 10th.
