It’s time for the annual school talent show and every faction is planning on flaunting their best assets in this zany delightful episode of Legacies.

The latest episode of Legacies is an entertaining mash-up of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Glee, not a likely combination but one that works surprisingly well and plays to the show’s strengths.

Given the main event of “We’re Gonna Need a Spotlight” is performance due to the annual school talent show, I figured I’d talk about my favorite performances or moments from the episode.

1. A unicorn appears!

This week’s monster is actually… a unicorn? With a gleaming mane and glistening horn to match its silky silver coat. Considering Hope’s barricade spell, it appears they might just have a new pet who will stave off the other monsters. I mean if the unicorn doesn’t die there’s no reason to worry about another creature coming down the pipeline.

Unfortunately, they wouldn’t have much of a show if they adopted a unicorn and ended the plot early so of course there is more to the story! The unicorn is merely a host to a nasty parasitic slug, one that spawns frequently and quickly infects almost every student at the school. At first, the symptoms of the parasite mimic those of intoxication, lowering inhibitions and making you giddy.

But then once the slug has settled in and melted your mind to moldable mush, it activates its mind control abilities and its agenda is simple. Destroy the urn.

2. Kaleb croons a ballad.

Kaleb’s slug influences him to put on a crazy show with the other vampires for the school’s talent show. It serves as a perfect distraction for Josie and Penelope (also infected) to try and steal the urn and destroy it.

I was surprised by the singing voice on Chris Lee! He can certainly sing. Actually, most of the cast can as was demonstrated by this episode.

3. Alaric and Emma perform karaoke.

In an incredibly endearing scene, Alaric finally gets to loosen up a little bit with fellow instructor, Emma Tig. The two go to a bar flirt over the drinking game “Truth or Shot” before finally getting up on stage and performing an incredible duet together.

Everything is fun and games until the night winds down and they become aware of their infected status and the fact they have to shock themselves in order to rid themselves of the parasitic slugs. Since Emma is in a relationship, she decides she should kiss Alaric while she can excuse herself by the body-snatching slug instead of having to take responsibility for her attraction to him.

Except, it turns out, only Emma was infected. Alaric? Not so much. He just got caught up in the buzz of his attraction to her and the alcohol. But unfortunately, by episode’s end, we learn Emma’s significant other is actually Dorian. Uh-oh.

4. Josie gets her moment in the spotlight.

Josie has an interesting week between getting infected by the slug parasite, sharing a few kisses with her ex, Penelope, and then rebelling against Lizzie’s cane dance for the talent show. Since the first talent show winds up devolving into a zombie-esque disaster, in the second go-round, Lizzie gives up the spotlight to her sister for a change.

It was a sweet moment between the sisters and an even better one for the impressive singing talents of Kaylee Bryant. Leading the charge with her song, the other witches file in behind her for a dance and score them yet another win.

5. Landon serenades Hope.

Just when you thought the singing performances were done for the night, Landon breaks out his guitar to serenade Hope. Shippers of the pair were likely happy with the bulk of the episode since an infected-Hope was riding high on the blossoming love. Between cake decorating and public PDA sessions, the only person not getting a little starry-eyed by the couple was Rafael, who is still nursing one heck of a crush on Hope himself.

But the second Hope learned of Landon’s journal of song lyrics, she was pushing for him to give her a little taste of the musical magic and this week he finally does! The scene was super adorable and it even made Hope cry!

Are Landon and Hope officially Legacies version of #Stelena? Maybe Stefan never started strumming an instrument but they definitely share some similarities in terms of early sincerity. But would that make Rafael the Damon? Or is another bad boy romantic foil blooming down the line?

Odds & Ends

  • As a fan of the Josie/Penelope ship I was happy to see the two of them together this week although not necessarily under the circumstances since they both were slug-infected. I hope that moving forward they can find their way back together.

A new episode of Legacies titled “There’s a Mummy on Main Street” premieres February 28 on the CW.
