Whiskey Cavalier Season 1, Episode 1 recap: The dramedy we didn’t know we needed
By Sandy C.
ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier has premiered and it’s a must-see action-packed hilarious dramedy!
Even after watching all the promos and trailers, I wasn’t sure what to expect from ABC’s new series Whiskey Cavalier. Action and drama? Sure, but all ABC shows come with some of both. What’s surprising is how great the quality and talent are delivering both must-have genres. What I was not expecting, though, was the comedy. The level of comedy in the trailers and promotional teasers does not compare to what awaits inside these episodes.
Whiskey Cavalier is hilarious from the get-go. The pilot makes that very clear by opening with Will Chase aka Whiskey (Scott Foley) crying on the couch, binge-eating and listening to Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” on blast. Will is going through the pain of a recent breakup. We quickly learn Will’s a hopeless romantic. Despite being in Paris, France, the city of love, Will is feeling everything but romance.
Don’t let the first impression of Will fool you, though. When duty calls, Will’s up in half a second, gun in hand and ready for action. Before the four-minute mark, we’re already witnessing the first action sequence and learn that yes, Will may be sappy, but he’s also a bit of a rebel as an FBI agent.

The mission Will embarks is presented to audiences Mission: Impossible-style. A virus being contained in a vial must be retrieved. His co-worker and best friend Ray (Josh Hopkins) is supposed to make the transaction, with Will as his eyes.
Ray, however, is running late and stuck in traffic. Ray suggests they abort the mission, but Will carries on. What follows is a far-fetched chase scene, but fun at the same time. Will almost flawlessly completes the mission, but is distracted by a couple who just became engaged. Awww.
Thanks to his bullet-proof vest, Will gets out of the ordeal alive. As if the start of Whiskey Cavalier isn’t intriguing enough, things get even more interesting when Lauren Cohan’s Frankie Trowbridge steps into the picture.
Will’s new mission is to capture Edgar Standish (Tyler James Williams) and bring him into US custody. Frankie is after the same thing, but under CIA terms. And as one of the top agents in her field, she’s not going to make this easy for Will.
Just when Will and Frankie’s power struggle was coming to an end, Frankie is shot. Will takes Frankie, with Edgar in tow, to Ray’s house to try to save Frankie. Will succeeds, but surprise, surprise — in walks Gigi.
Who’s Gigi? Will’s ex-girlfriend who broke up with him and got with Ray behind Will’s back. Ouch, betrayal! Ray seemed sketchy right away, I’ll admit, but I did not see this coming! To add salt to the wound, Gigi tells Will she and Ray have been together for seven months. Yikes.
Ray and Will don’t fight for long as their boss, Alex (Dylan Walsh ), enters. By Edgar’s expression, you can tell he already knows what’s going on. But Ray and Will have difficulty piecing everything together: Alex has been pulling the strings here.
Alex never wanted the duo to get the vial. He is wearing a ring that reads “Caute,” the same message he saw on the phone of the guy Will was chasing for the virus in the opening sequence. It was him all along.
Who saves the day? Frankie! She’s unconscious at first, but wakes up at the sound of Alex shooting Ray. Frankie pulls a fake tampon that turns out to be a small bomb out of her pocket to cause a diversion. It works.
On to their next mission! Who’s leading the team? Whiskey and Frankie still need to figure that out, and we don’t care as long as we see them team up again (but really it should be Frankie).
Whiskey Cavalier doesn’t try to front, it knows exactly what it is, a fun spy drama that’s just out to have a good time, and we’re here for it! The series takes an overdone formula and creates something that feels fresh and new.
Final Notes:
- “We accept the love we think we deserve” and “We have our feelings, our feelings don’t have us” are quotes to live by!
- “There’s a lot of sexual tension in the car,” Edgar is just saying what we’re all thinking.
- Can we have a look at Will’s Breakup Playlist? Asking for a friend.
- Now that Ray’s out of the picture, Will needs a new bestie!
- Better yet, Will needs to find real love! Frankie, perhaps? Of course! But all in good time.
Whiskey Cavalier airs Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. Central only on ABC.
