A mummy is haunting Main Street on this week’s Legacies, which means Alaric has to unite the monster hunting gang to track down the urn and unravel a mummy in the process.

While “There’s a Mummy on Main Street” offers plenty of whimsy, laughs, and a beautiful road trip montage, the episode also gives us some more answers about the mysterious TRIAD and the importance of the malivore. Read on to check out the 5 biggest takeaways.

1. Road trips are rough.

In an extended scene of hilarity we get a glimpse of Alaric-so-help-me-god-I-will-turn-this-car-around-Saltzmann driving a minivan full of teenagers on a six hour trip to  a monster hunt/urn search (since after Alaric briefly got slug-possessed last week he threw the urn in a river). Lizzie and Hope are at each other’s throats, Josie is throwing up on the floor, and Alaric is trying to break the tension with the age-old “99 bottles of beer on the wall” diddy.

Throw in some passive-aggressive (who am I kidding, it’s aggressive-aggressive) Punch Buggy from Lizzie to Hope and you’ve got yourself a miserable expedition. Are we sure the minivan isn’t the monster of the week?

2. TRIAD is a clean-up crew.

Agent Clarke returns and only Hope recognizes him. The last time we saw him was during the trip to Kansas, the one only she remembers. His agenda in this episode isn’t evil exactly. He wants Alaric and his team of magical teenagers to help clean up the whole mummy mess.

Turns out, TRIAD is a supernatural clean-up crew. Kind of like the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter or the Men in Black. The purpose of malivore is to keep monsters hidden away from the rest of the world.

But by episode’s end, Agent Clarke is in possession of the urn and he throws it into malivore. Perhaps TRIAD’s mission statement is to hide the supernatural but it would appear that Clarke has a different goal in mind. He wants the portal to open, which would trigger an apocalyptic event.

3. Dorian knows what happened between Alaric and Emma.

Emma is invited along on the mummy-hunting trip by Dorian. Alaric, while inwardly pleased to see Emma, is obviously having a hard time with his current love triangle predicament. I find the love triangle between adult characters somewhat refreshing.

By episode’s end, all the stolen glances between her and Alaric have Emma feeling guilty and she confesses to Dorian about the kiss… including the fact Alaric was not slug-possessed at the time. Dorian’s response is to punch Alaric in the face and then quit!

4. Josie had a crush on Hope.

In another surprising confession, Josie admits she used to have a crush on Hope and she didn’t want anyone to know, especially Lizzie because she feared Lizzie would try to pursue Hope.

It’s why she made up a lie that Hope was spreading vicious rumors about Lizzie and her “episodes” in the past. She also inadvertently started a fire that got a family trip ruined and Lizzie always believed it was Hope who did it because she was jealous of the Saltzmanns.

Once Hope learns the reason Lizzie has held a grudge against her for so many years, she promises Lizzie she would never say anything like that and makes a good point. I mean look at who Hope’s father is, who her grandfather is, if anyone was going to be understanding about having psychotic breaks and mental health issues, it would be Hope.

5. Kaleb teaches Alaric a valuable lesson about the Salvatore School students.

Alaric winds up needing Kaleb to accompany his misfit gang on their monster hunt due to his special vampire skills. Although his rules are steadfast that Kaleb shouldn’t be using his abilities under any circumstances, that quickly goes out the window when they need to compel a horde of locals to forget they ever saw the mummy’s beetle harbingers.

Plus Kaleb gets the chance to teach Alaric something for once. They attend a school for supernatural kids and they should be allowed to use their abilities to the fullest extent so they can truly understand and gain full control. “Times are different now and the rules should be too. Vampires need real blood, witches need offensive magic.”

Alaric appears to ponder what Kaleb says and I agree with him. At the end of the day, these teens need to learn everything about their powers, take the good with the bad. Especially if they’re going to keep hunting monsters on the regular!

Odds & Ends

  • “This is plaguey right?”
  • I loved watching Kaleb compelling the townfolk and sort of offer some therapy, coaxing one guy to fight for a raise and a woman to quit smoking for good!
  • “You and your crossbow are kind of manspread across three powerful witches.”
  • Hope: You had a crush on me? Josie: Of course, who wouldn’t? – Wow, I mean I love Penelope and Josie but WOW. What an excellent scene! Gonna be thinking about this for 10 years I’m definitely boarding this ship train too. I love how flattered Hope looked!

A new episode of Legacies titled “The Boy Who Still Has a Lot of Good to Do” premieres March 7th on the CW.
