It’s time for the guys and the gals of You’re the Worst to go on individual adventures before the wedding. Bachelor and bachelorette parties ensue.

We’re nearing the end, and it’s unclear how the big breakup on You’re the Worst will happen. Furthermore, we don’t know who will eventually take the title of worst person on the show. Answers are getting closer.

Like other episodes, there is a small vignette about the future. The future: Edgar running through the forest with camouflage. There’s a little girl with him and they’re at a wedding.

It’s time to get ready for the wedding!

Jimmy had a 3 page to-do list for the wedding, and he’s done with a day to go. Gretchen did nothing, so she’s finished as well. She’s happy, calm, and pushes a glass off the end table. She doesn’t clean it up; Jimmy doesn’t either. He can’t fix her mistakes, and it’s a perfect metaphor of the unconditional acceptance between the pair.

Guys and gals split

Bachelor Party

The guys go out. To start, they play a game of curling. Jimmy Loves it! It’s his dream sport, and he believes it’s misunderstood. They’re both horrible, and fail over and over. Eventually, however, they get a bulls-eye, and they’re ecstatic.

They follow it up with a smash room. Jimmy says he doesn’t have impotent rage, but uses a sledge-hammer and a baseball bat to blast things. He loves it. A sword and axe follow. Jimmy vents about marriage, which is likely a result of the thoughts of his parents. A mannequin with a picture of his dad is next to hit, and he can’t do it.

Finally, the guys go to a private club with tuxedos. Edgar got him a membership. It’s all Eyes Wide Shut, and Edgar snaps at the help. They bring caviar, cigars, and liquor. Jimmy loves it, and is in complete zen being aristocracy. Edgar really knows him. Jimmy admits to being a bad friend to Edgar, which opens the door for the truth to come out. Edgar tells Jimmy not to marry Gretchen, because love is not the same as being good for one another. Edgar storms out after the following interaction:

  • J: “I don’t want to see you ever again!”
  • E: “You’ll destroy each other!”
  • J: “No other way I’d rather go!”

Lindsay has different plans for the gals. They’re staying in and having everyone pamper them. Then Gretchen’s mom shows up. She’s unbearable, and Lindsay almost smashes her with a chair. Gretchen wants her to do it, but then Lindsay leaves.

Mother dearest is overbearing, wants to change the curtains, wants to rearrange the seating list, and she still thinks it’s Boone. Gretchen sets record straight, but her mother has known the entire time. She still wants to watch the wedding because she’s “been front line for [Gretchen’s] mistakes.”

Gretchen eventually explodes on her mom, pointing to the drowned American Girl dolls that should have signaled her mental illness to her parents. While crying, she says her mother is not supportive. Her mother admits to being miserable, wants an affair, and thinks Gretchen doesn’t have to make life so difficult for herself.

Ultimately, her mother thinks it’s not worth complaining because people don’t want to hear it. Gretchen replies, “Nope! Just you, not Jimmy.”

When Gretchen’s mom leaves the apartment she says having kids isn’t worth it, but tells her daughter “I’m glad you found Jimmy.” Gretchen wishes the same for her mother.

New relationships

Lindsay lectures Becca about taking care of herself because of the pregnancy, even though Vernon says challenging a baby makes X-Men. Suddenly, Becca tells Paul she wants to keep the baby. It’s clear extortion, and Vernon flat-out asks for six figures.

Paul says he’s out, and wants to travel. This stresses Becca and Vernon out enough that the eventually haggle down to $15K after Becca starts with $30K. Amended contract in hand, Paul is confident. Lindsay likes this new, confident Paul. He leaves and she calls him before he gets out of building. They talk on the phone like they’re dating, and a split-screen that resembles a past You’re the Worst episode appears.

As the episode ends, Gretchen steps on the broken glass nobody cleaned up. It’s an obvious metaphor for the reality of needing someone to clean up her messes. If Jimmy won’t do it, she probably needs someone who will or she’ll likely hurt herself.
