7. Oberyn Martell

Portrayed by: Pedro Pascal

First appearance: “Two Swords” (Season 4, Episode 1)

Last appearance: “The Mountain and the Viper” (Season 4, Episode 8)

Why we miss him: Prince Oberyn of House Martell was only in seven episodes of Game of Thrones but his character left a lasting impression. Had he been in more episodes, there would be no surprise if he became a fan favorite. The man, known as the “Red Viper,” had all the confidence in the world. Oberyn was known for his bad temper but he also had the superior fighting skills to back up his sharp tongue.

Oberyn was very loyal when it came to his family. This unwavering loyalty was his most admirable quality. Oberyn attended Joffrey’s wedding with the intention of acting revenge on the Lannisters for the death of his sister and her children.

After accusing Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane of taking orders from Tywin to kill Elia, Oberyn finally got a chance to fight back. He volunteered to fight for Tyrion after a trial by combat was requested, giving him the chance to face off one-by-one with the man who killed his family members.

In the end, Oberyn was killed in one of the most shocking deaths within the series. After wounding his opponent, Oberyn got a little too cocky and the distraction gave Clegane a chance to fight back. Ultimately, Oberyn was killed after Clegane crushed in his skull.

Even in death, Oberyn got the last laugh and proved why he is known as the Red Viper. Before the battle, Oberyn drenched his spear in poisonous venom which gravely injured Clegane.
