The vampires set their plan to take over North America into motion as Nadja turns a LARPING virgin into a vampire in What We Do in the Shadows Episode 2.

Last week on What We Do in the Shadows, Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja were visited by their vampire Baron, who tasked them with taking over the New World like they were supposed to have done centuries ago. They’re a bit out of touch with the current times, behind on social norms and such, so they’re not exactly equipped for world domination. Not to mention their absolute morons.

Remember how the sun guard over the Baron’s coffin fell down at the end of the last episode? Well forget about it because nothing happened, the ugly dictator is fine and still pestering the others about taking over the New World. But before they get on that, they want to dine on some virgins first, so Guillermo takes them to the same LARPING group he found before, with the same two kids they almost killed in the first episode.

The vampires watch their D&D game like curious mice through a window but decide not to eat them because they’re too pathetic. Nadja however, feels a soft spot for the “little female one” Jenna (Beanie Feldstein) when the boys in the group exclude her.

Complicated house guests

More from FX

Because this show is pretty much a mockumentary about socially inept vampires, there’s a whole lot of nothing going on except the confirmation that all houseguests are awful no matter the species. Everyone’s had that houseguest, the one that never leaves, invites their friends over, and keeps a bell by their bedside table in case they want a glass of water in the middle of the night. That’s the kind of houseguest the Baron is.

He brings along his creepy familiar that walks up behind everyone like some kind of haunted Annabelle doll and eavesdrops. In Nandor’s own words, “she’s worse than Guillermo.” The Baron is also an extremely long napper and according to Nadja and Laszlo, who were both his former lovers, the Baron has a habit of giving orders in the middle of sex then refusing to repeat them. Nadja remembers the Baron told her to take over North America centuries ago but she forgot because he said it during a sex act.

City Council

Before the vampires go about with conquering the New World, they must first figure out what the New World is exactly. Staten Island? New York? America? North America?

They settle on just America because they consider Canada to be useless. Each makes a list of changes they plan on doing once they take over, including a ban on turtlenecks, a vampire TV channel, a dome over the city to block sunlight, and selective areas in town where Nuns aren’t allowed.

They go to Craig Robinson, the energy drainer, for help with finding the leaders of Staten Island and he takes them to City Council, his favorite place to feed because it’s filled with despair. After Craig drains them of energy, Nandor goes to speak at the podium and announces the upcoming vampire take over. He tries his best, really gives it his all, but unfortunately, they don’t consider his discussion appropriate for the appointed topic of the night, ordinances, and tells him to come back in two months during an open session.

Despite their failure at the council meeting, the vampires pinpoint the city’s mayor, Barbara Lazarro as the leader of Staten Island and make their own individual plans of action. Nandor thinks it’s best to make the man planning to run against her next term their personal agent of chaos but Laszlo thinks they should become Barbara Lazarro’s ally instead, neither plan pans out.

Nadja makes a new vampire

While the boys are playing with the humans, Nadja approaches Jenna, the LARPING virgin she felt a soft spot for in the beginning and decides to turn her. She feels a special connection to her because having once been a poor gypsy forced to burn donkey dung and later the donkey for heat, she understands what it feels like to be excluded.

Nadja’s never explicit in her offer though so Jenna thinks she’s talking about embarking on a sexual affair together, which she seems very much into by the way. Even when Nadja bites her neck and hands her a bottle of blood she still thinks it’s something sexual. Later, she thinks she has the flu and throws up worse than Linda Blair in The Exorcist.

City Council 2.0

In order to become Barbara Lazarro’s ally, Laszlo goes to her house and asks what he needs to do to win her favor. She blatantly tells him that the raccoon population is out of control and he kills every raccoon around and leaves them on her doorstep in a shockingly large pile. This, of course, upsets her, as if would anyone who isn’t a fur collector or raccoon hater, thinking it’s a personal threat against her life. However, Laszlo made her forget their conversation, so she has no idea it was him.

Meanwhile, Nandor thinks trying to befriend the mayor is pointless so he mind controls her competition, Doug Peterson, to be their messenger at the next council meeting, be their hellhound as he says, but this doesn’t go as planned either. Instead of spreading their message, Peterson acts like a maniac ranting about demons and vampires and is dragged out by security.

The three are no closer to ruling the New World than they were when the episode started, but the Baron is probably too busy napping to notice. Meanwhile, how do they pay rent exactly? Does Guillermo pay the bills? This is what I want to know.

The next episode of What We Do in the Shadows airs Wednesday night on 10:00 p.m. EST on FX.
