Jane the Virgin Season 5, Episode 3 recap: Jane the courted?
Michael/Jason comes courting Jane, which causes tensions between everyone. Rogelio’s feud with River escalates again over gender parity.
Jason/Michael is not letting Jane go without a fight this week on Jane the Virgin. And, friends, let me tell you, that ending? Has me all kind of conflicted. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The other storylines on last night’s episode: Rogelio fighting for equal pay with River on his show, and Petra and Jane struggle to parent the kids, while struggling with their own relationship.
Jason announces to Jane that he won’t sign the divorce papers until he gets one date with her. He’s courting her! Jane and Raf don’t like it at all. And things explode when Mateo sees Jason in the lobby of the hotel and freaks out.

Jason is constantly texting Jane to get her to go out with him, but she keeps turning him down. It’s to the point where it’s really getting to Raf. Jason just won’t take no for an answer and he’s getting aggressive. When Raf goes to the hotel to spend time with Petra and the twins, he confronts Jason and Jason basically says he’s going to fight for Jane, because Michael seemed to always be her choice. Raf is actually mature, and doesn’t punch Jason, even though I totally would have.
Jason finally gets her to go out with him, and they go fishing. While on the boat, Jason puts his arms around her, and then she catches a fish. She later tells Petra that she didn’t feel anything. She goes to Jason and tells him he needs to leave. He agrees. Later, Jane and Raf have their much needed adult time, and talk about their future, which could include adopting children.
Meanwhile, Rogelio finds out about River making twice as much as him, and that creates a lot of drama between them, including him accidentally kicking her in the face, causing half her face to be paralyzed. And Mateo, Ella and Anna are having a really hard time getting along, so Jane and Petra pull out all the parenting tools.
Here are the top three tear jerking moments of this week’s episode:
Rogelio on pay parity for minorities
Xo is trying really hard to be supportive of Rogelio, but she just doesn’t understand why he is so upset about River making more money than him. He should be celebrating the fact that River is an actress earning what she deserves to be paid.
That’s when Rogelio drops some truth bombs on the situation. Yes, he’s a man, which has all its own privileges attached to it. But he’s also Hispanic, which in today’s America, has lots of challenges tied to it. He has done some research, and he found out pay parity is not just between genders, it’s also with minorities.
He has always dreamed of being a star in America. And he worked hard for four years to get his telenovela on television, starring himself. And now, with everything going on in the country and then River getting paid double what he is, it’s just hard for him. The show isn’t making him as happy as he thought it was.
When Xo relays this all to Rogelio, she fights for them to have equal pay, and Rogelio tells her what a generous person she is. Until he sees her tabloid interview. But that’ll be next week’s Rogelio storyline, I’m sure.
Jane and Petra: sisters?
During the whole parenting thing, Jane realizes that Petra has felt left out. At first she thinks it’s because Raf has been dealing with the Jason stuff. But after a fight in the neutral tent zone, Petra reveals that she’s feeling left out by Jane.
The two have grown close, and it hurts Petra that Jane hasn’t come to talk to her about Jason, but she has talked to everyone else. They admit that they think of each other as their sister, and they realize that they really have grown close over the years.
Jane finally opens up to Petra about Jason, and it’s Petra who tells her to send Jason away.
Jason and Jane say goodbye.
Jason shows up at Jane’s grandmother’s with the signed divorce papers. They are a little awkward at first, but their goodbye turns tear filled and heartfelt. You can really see that she is struggling with letting Jason go.
He came with a fishing pole as a parting gift, but Jane said she wasn’t going to use it. As they tearfully pull apart from a hug, and she shuts the door, Jason turns around, and bumps the ceiling with his fishing pole, causing white dust to float down and cover him, just like that first snow when they first kissed.
And friends, in that moment, Michael got his memories back and his heart glowed.
