The first episode of the final Game of Thrones didn’t feature Tyrion very much, but his efforts were definitely quality over quantity.

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched the first episode of Game of Thrones this season, then you’re seriously missing out. Having said that, this post will contain spoilers. So if you’re planning on waiting to binge the entire season on a streaming service, bail out now.

Tyrion Lannister, a genius with words. He’s hilarious as well. Is it enough for him to survive?

Insult king

The great thing about Tyrion Lannister is obviously his wit. Whether he’s telling a joke, talking to whores, getting the upper hand in the Small Council, or spitting out legendary quotes (e.g. “That’s what I do: I drink and I know things.”), he always seems to get the best in verbal sparring. It’s not different in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 1.

More from Game of Thrones

Initially, Tyrion is enjoying a ride into Winterfell with his frenemy Varys. Tyrion obviously couldn’t/wouldn’t make a long trip on a horse – can he ride a horse? – but Varys is just lazy and prissy. As a result, the mentalists of the Daenerys Targaryen’s advisors get plenty of time to have in-depth conversations.

The first such conversation of the episode shows just how impervious to criticism Tyrion is. He makes fun of Varys being a eunuch, and essentially says that retorts about his stature don’t mean anything. Remember, he’s the most famous dwarf in the world. He’s killed his mother (accidentally) and father (on purpose), was charged with killing his nephew, and betrayed his sister. He hasn’t exactly had the easiest go of it. Consequently, getting the upper hand on someone verbally is all he really has to enjoy. Great for him in this situation.

In a second situation, however, his stature is definitely a negative. Sitting atop a bluff overlooking battle preparation with Davos Seaworth and Varys, the trio discuss the horses to which they’ve hitched their respective wagons: Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. Their leaders’ relative youth is the topic, and Tyrion mentions that he’s not as old as Davos. More troubling, however, is the observation their age could be the reason they get ignored.

Based on his interaction with Sansa, she’s already ignoring his input. If nobody listens to Tyrion or respects his words, then what’s the point of having him around?
