Game of Thrones delivered us what many have considered a twist on Daenerys’ storyline. If you actually look back at the full series, there were always clues on what to expect from her in the end.

Caution: There are spoilers from Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5.

Game of Thrones delivered a fiery penultimate episode. Just as it looked like the Lannisters would surrender, Daenerys became the Mad Queen. And while there are many who are shocked at the twist to her storyline, it’s not actually that shocking when looking back. This is a development that has been a long time coming.

More from Game of Thrones

We only have to look back at the first season to see the type of mentality Dany has always had. She’s a vengeful and vindictive person at times. The witch who ended up cursing Drogo was burned alive in his funeral pyre and she was willing to burn the slavers to the ground for their action towards the slaves. She gave the “break the wheel” speech, but there was a darkness in her voice that made it clear she wasn’t necessarily putting the people first.

Still need another example? How about the treatment of her brother? Okay, so Viserys was crazy and would have been just like his father, but that didn’t mean Dany should have just sat there and watched him die with the golden crown on his head. There was no remorse or feeling from her. Even the Lannisters (well, most) have shown remorse for their actions or when things have happened to their family members.

Dany has always teetered on the edge of becoming her father. She’s fought so hard against it but it was always there deep down. When you binge-watch the whole season in one go, you start to pick up on these things with rewatches. There were plenty of moments that foreshadowed her journey into becoming the Mad Queen.

However, the moments haven’t always been in your face, which involves good writing. You have to go looking at times, which means actually paying attention to the storylines.
