Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5 delivered a long list of notable character deaths. There is one in particular (okay, maybe two) who definitely deserved better.

Spoiler Alert! Massive spoilers are ahead if you are not caught up on the series, particularly if you missed the latest episode — Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5. Proceed at your own risk…

In the latest episode of Game of Thrones, the Hound and the Mountain had a fiery ending. It was sad to see Sandor die, but it’s a death we all knew was coming and were prepared for. Same for Varys. We never were fans of Qyburn, so his death was insignificant to us. It was about time Euron died — though I don’t believe Jaime should have killed him, Yara deserved that kill.

We all wanted the best for Jaime, and he almost had a happy ending, had he stayed with Brienne. Many fans were disappointed in him because they believed he would go to King’s Landing to stop and kill Cersei, not help her. Even those who knew Jaime wanted to die with Cersei (or try to save her) had a small bit of hope in their hearts they were wrong.

Needless to say, Jaime Lannister deserved a better story. But he’s not the character we’re here to chat about, that is Cersei Lannister.

If you loved Cersei, we don’t judge you. Maybe you connect with her in some way and have your reasons. And if you hate the character, that only means Cersei is an amazing villain and Lena Heady did a fantastic job portraying the character. The bottom line is: Love her or hate her, Cersei Lannister is a remarkable character and she deserved a much better ending.

True, Cersei watched her soldiers and the city crumble as Daenerys easily took over and won (well, she did a little more than that). It was satisfying to see the shock on Cersei’s face to know she had been defeated. But being crushed by the castle? That’s not the death such an important character deserved and it is very underwhelming.

Arya Stark killing Cersei would have been a bit too much — she did already have her moment when she killed the Night King, but even that would have been better than what actually happened. How do you feel about Cersei Lannister’s death?

The Game of Thrones Season 8 finale airs Sunday, May 19, only on HBO.
