In the Dark Season 1, Episode 7 recap: Did Wes kill Tyson?
By Mads Lennon
Murphy closes in on Tyson’s murderer, Felix steps up to help Guiding Hope, and Jess witnesses something traumatic in the latest episode of In the Dark.
Murphy almost gets herself and Chloe killed in the latest installment of In the Dark. After recklessly going against the wishes of Max and Darnell, she makes herself a target for the man who may have killed Tyson.
There is a surprising amount of action packed into this week’s episode as characters form unlikely alliances who all share one common goal: keep Murphy from dying.
A killer behind bars
In last week’s episode, Murphy recognized Wesley’s voice while she was with Max at the food truck. She firmly believes he is the guy who killed Tyson and despite Max and Darnell warning her against going to the police, she informs Jules and Dean of her intel anyways.

The detectives arrange for a voice line-up, and Murphy does indeed pinpoint Wes out of all six guys, leading to his arrest. For a moment, it appears a murder was solved, and Murphy saved the day.
She tells Dean he should take a breather and spend a day relaxing – between the sheets- with his new girlfriend, the bartender. In return, Murphy will watch Chloe for a couple of hours.
Chloe and Murphy together lead to some fun hijinks. Chloe has a crush on a boy from her school and begs Murphy to take her to the mall so she can accidentally-on-purpose run into him. Unable to help herself, Murphy obliges, disobeying Dean’s direct orders not to take Chloe out of the house.
A mall trip turns out to be just what Murphy needs to relax and have some harmless fun. She takes Chloe shopping, and they do meet up with the boy. He’s even interested in Chloe, and they exchange phone numbers before leaving for their Uber.
And thus the record scratch, their Uber driver is none other than Wesley, who managed to get released on bail. The thing is, Darnell told Nia that Murphy was responsible for identifying Wes. We can assume it was her who bailed him out. He has friends in high places and does precisely what Darnell and Max predicted he would – comes after Murphy.
Luckily for her, and Chloe, Jess continues to track Murphy’s phone. She, Darnell, and Max team up to track them down. Murphy proves her cleverness by writing 9-1-1 on the window of the car in lipstick, and they’re able to rescue both her and Chloe.
Then comes the tricky part, what should they do with Wes? Jess wants to do the right thing and get the police involved, but neither Max nor Darnell thinks that’s a good idea. Karma saves them from having to decide as Wes makes a break for it and immediately gets hit by a car, with poor Jess having watched the whole thing. Judging by the teaser for next week’s episode, she’s traumatized by what she witnessed.
At the end of all this, Jules learns that Wes wasn’t even the real murderer. He may have shot Tyson, but someone else strangled him.
Felix saves the day
In a somewhat strange, but endearing, side-plot, Felix bonds with Murphy’s father, Hank. Stress over keeping the doors open at Guiding Hope has kept him from his typical relaxation technique – smoking weed. He requests Felix buy him some. Jess hooks Felix up with her personal pot dealer, honestly, I’m kind of surprised to learn Jess smokes, and Felix is as awkward about the entire scenario as one would expect.
Mainly because the dealer is a cute girl and he is terrible at flirting. But he does get the weed and even smokes some with Hank. In the midst of all this, Felix offers to buy Guiding Hope! All his wealth was bound to come in handy at some point.
It remains to be seen how he and Murphy are going to work together with him technically being her boss now. Not that Murphy will treat him any differently, let’s be real here.
Odds & Ends
- Dean banning Murphy from Chloe was a little harsh. Yes, Murphy shouldn’t have taken Chloe out of the apartment but, as she points out, her identity should have been kept safe. It wasn’t entirely her fault things took such a wrong turn.
