FitzSimmons battle their own memories and learn there is no love without pain in this week’s standout bottle episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s well documented by this point that Fitz and Simmons on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have perhaps the most challenging relationship on television. Not because their love is ever in doubt, it’s just that it seems the entire universe is against them. They’ve been separated by space, time and death, yet always find their way back to each other no matter what.

Fitz calls their love a curse, and it feels like he’s realistically just a few steps away from realizing he’s on a television show that is adamant about separating them again and again, because really there’s no better way to explain it.

This week, the two are reunited at last, but it’s not the loving reunion they imagine as the Chronicoms decide the best way to save their destroyed planet is by throwing the two into a mind prison to let them solve time travel because they invented it in an alternate future. There’s a sentence you don’t hear every day.

But weird science aside, the episode is really an excuse to examine the show’s best relationship and let Fitz and Simmons really dig into their baggage and personal issues. And when I say their minds go to war, I mean that quite literally as soon Fitz’s Ego (represented by Fitz’s Framework dark side Leopold) and Simmons Id (a terrifying ghost creature that feels like the cousin of Samara from The Ring) start taking over and threatening the lovebirds.

Although the concept is great, and Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker bring series-best work on this episode, is it a good episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? I’ve come to realize over the years that a successful Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode is best when it incorporates humor, heart, action and plot progression all in one fluid episode, so how does Season 6, Episode 6 “Inescapable” stack up? Let’s find out right now!

Humor

Although this episode is by far the most terrifying episode the show has ever done with the inclusion of the Simmons monster, it’s also hilarious. Things like Fitz screaming at a 7-year-old Jemma, or watching the evil Leopold passionately make out with the ghost creature are just a few laugh out loud moments that fill this episode. It’s easy for an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to go overboard on the humor or the darkness, but this episode has a crazy good balance of both.

Heart

You know any episode that centers on the FitzSimmons relationship is going to tug at the heart strings but where to start? Fitz’s second proposal to Jemma? Fitz learning the future version of himself died saving the world? Fitz and Simmons yelling at each other that their relationship causes pain, but the two love each other so intensely they’ll gladly suffer through it ten times over? All of it packs a huge punch.

More from ABC

Even for an episode devoted to FitzSimmons, the episode even manages to surprise us with a Coulson appearance, which just made me miss the team’s father figure. Yep, the heart was definitely covered in this episode.

Action

You would think an episode like this couldn’t bring the action, and true that it doesn’t go overboard, but how could you not throw up your hands in glee when Fitz and Simmons both realize their memories of their close friends could help them in their times of need? Mack laying the beat down on Simmons ghost creature is great (although it doesn’t end well for Mack), but the coolest shot is watching Daisy burst in to rescue Simmons from Leopold. Thank you, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for throwing in a sprinkle of action in an already awesome episode!

Plot Progression

With a shortened season, there’s not a lot of time for filler, but technically this episode was the fluffiest out of any episode so far in season six. What did we really learn that we haven’t already? The episode ends with Enoch breaking FitzSimmons out and going on the run together, and concludes with Daisy learning that there’s someone who looks like Coulson running around. That’s about it, but an episode like this is important for characters like Fitz and Simmons, who after so long a part, deserve some time with one another.

Overall, this was a great episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that was light on plot, heavy on emotional drama and humor. They can’t do this every week, but every season should have an episode like this one.
