iZombie recap: How much does Liv find out about Martin?
iZombie Season 5, Episode 10 gives us a noir episode that fans will probably either love or hate. Just what happened in the episode? Here’s your recap.
Let’s be honest. Fans either love or hate the noir murder mysteries. So, iZombie Season 5, Episode 10 was always going to be a risk. As much as I’m not a fan of the noir theme (and wasn’t a fan of the episode) I respect the willingness to take a risk.
I also appreciate the show not creating drama between Liv and Ravi when it came to finding out about her father’s dealings with Mr. Boss. In most shows, Liv would spend time refusing to believe Ravi, but we quickly got to see Liv call Martin out on his actions.

There was at least hope that the formula for the Utopium batch was still around, but Martin says it’s gone. Why do I not trust him?
Meanwhile, the Department of Defense need to figure out what to do with Seattle after the zombie attack on national TV. Some are still uncertain about dropping a bomb on the place.
But now to the noir-themed episode. It all takes place when the victim is a private investigator, who is killed at The Scratching Post.

Who killed the P.I.?
Liv is immediately suspicious of the waitress that found the victim, but her tears make Clive wonder whether she is innocent. When the lead suspect — the girl the P.I. wanted to “serve” him — turns up dead in the freezer, it’s clear that the waitress was just a femme fatale.
Sure enough, Jane (if that’s really her name) clearly did it. She turns up at The Scratching Post with a gun aimed at Blaine. Crybaby manages to knock her out, and naturally, Blaine decides to eat her brain to get answers about why she killed people and returned to the scene of the crime.
Despite Clive wanting to do things by the book, Liv’s Noir Brain takes her on a break-in option to get information. Blaine turns up and, after chatting to Clive, Liv realizes that he’s eaten Jane’s brain. While in police custody, Blaine gets a vision of Jane finding out the dead waitress learned about a zombie cure.
Liv’s Noir Brain ruins chances of getting Blaine to talk. It’s not surprising that Clive has had enough and kicks Liv off the case.
Liv cracks the case
Of course, Liv doesn’t stay off the case. With a vision of the P.I. having the cure and taking it The Scratching Post, Liv manages to figure everything out. Now all she needs to figure out where Jane stashed the cure before Blaine does.
Blaine knows what Liv is up to when she gets to The Scratching Post. When a fight breaks out in the kitchen between Liv and Blaine, it looks like Liv is going to lose. However, she’d already called for backup before walking in. Clive steps in just in time.
Unsurprisingly, with everything stacked against him, Blaine turns Crybaby in. However, there’s still no cure.
That cure is in a dry cleaners. The P.I. was sending a slip to Jane. However, someone has already beaten both Liv and Blaine to the ticket. Who? Only Candy of all people!
Martin wants to figure out the formula
So, it turns out that Martin may have been truthful about the formula. He turns up at the morgue to work out the formula with Ravi, trying to find out how Ravi got a cure without knowing the full utopium formula. While Ravi wants to believe Martin is being helpful, it’s clear that he’s working another angle, especially when he finds out about the Max Rager.
There’s a problem with the key card system at Filmore-Graves. It was always clear that was a hint of a bigger problem, so it wasn’t surprising when a janitor has two key cards. Before Major can get answers as to why, the janitor runs into a shower hook on a wall. Nor is it surprising to find out that it’s all linked to Max Rager.
Sure enough, Martin has created a new injection that will mean the full zombies will take instructions. Yes, Martin was using Ravi to find out how to step up the New World Order.
Hearing about the janitor and Max Rager from Major, Ravi realizes that this could have been Martin. Liv decides it’s time to check out the bolted door. While finding out about the zombies, Liv and Ravi also come across the formulas for Max Rager. There’s a good chance they have the formula needed for the cure.
Odds & ends
- Clive has always been so accepting and patient when Liv is on different brains. It was only a matter of time that he’d kick her off a case.
- Don-E’s lack of care about the humans/zombies killed and more about his business means his girlfriend, Darcy, walks away. That didn’t take long.
- Darcy does hear Don-E out. It turns out she thought she was replaceable. Don-E’s proposal was so sweet.
- We knew Aly Mikalcka sang before she acted, so it was fun to see her do karaoke and not all that well in a drunken state. I love seeing those who can sing pretend they can’t. Jensen Ackles does it in Supernatural too!
- It was only a matter of time before Liv found out about Martin’s dealing with Utopium and the raging zombies.
- The Department of Defense decide against bombing New Seattle for the time being, but soon there will be someone working with the humans in the war.
