The 2019 VMAs nominations are in. With that in mind, we’re taking a look back at some of the music award show’s most iconic moments.

From Ariana Grande to Taylor Swift to Shawn Mendes to Cardi B, the 2019 VMAs nominations have officially been unveiled. How did your favorite artists stack up? This year, the VMAs are also introducing a new category for Best K-Pop.

While we won’t find out who wins until August 26th, when the official ceremony airs on MTV, we decided to celebrate the nomination news with a look back at 5 of the VMAs most OMG moments over the years.

5. Lady Gaga’s performance of “Paparazzi.”

Before she was starring in A Star is Born, Gaga was dominating the pop charts. Who could forget her iconic performance of hit single, “Paparazzi,” at the 2009 VMAs?

She ended the entire performance by faking her own death on stage, complete with a noose and buckets of fake blood. She always took performing to a new level. That wasn’t the first time she made headlines at the VMAs either. Remember the meat dress?

4. “Miley, what’s good?”

Miley Cyrus was going through…something at the time she hosted the 2015 VMAs. Only two years before that she gave her infamous twerking performance with Robin Thicke, which, on a long list, would have been included on its own.

But in her hosting year, she engaged in a war of words with rapper Nicki Minaj. Minaj was on stage accepting an award when she decided to call Cyrus out for talking about her in The New York Times the day before. “Now back to this b***h who had a lot to say about me in the press. Miley, what’s good?”

Many people were unsure whether or not this moment was staged but given Miley recently name-checked Minaj in a song (“I love you Nicki, but I listen to Cardi) Nicki’s retaliated against Miley on a radio show, it would seem they’re still not on good terms.

3. Beyonce announces she’s pregnant.

From playing Nala in the 2019 Lion King remake to dropping surprise albums, no one can deny Beyonce is a cultural icon. It doesn’t take much for her to make headlines given the resume of excellence she’s worked hard in cultivating over the years.

It shouldn’t come as much surprise that she makes it on to the list for her 2011 moment where she announced to the world she was pregnant with Blue Ivy. Bey didn’t even have to say anything, she just cradled her belly and became the talk of the internet (and the world) for the next few days.

2. Madonna and Britney lock lips.

If this were to happen now, no one would bat an eye. But when Madonna and Britney Spears full-on made out during the 2003 VMAs, people were shocked. The moment came right after a wild performance by Britney, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera, although people often forget Aguilera was even involved. Once Madonna grabbed Britney, it was all over and the crowd went wild.

1. “I’ma let you finish…”

You knew it was coming from the moment this article began but we can’t not include this moment when Kanye West ran onstage in the middle of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. In 2009, Swift had just won the award for Best Female Video for her song, “You Belong With Me,” when West decided to add his two cents.

He charged on to the stage, took Swift’s microphone and let the entire audience know that he would let Swift finish, (how gracious of you, Kanye), but Beyonce had the best video of all time.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with him, I think we were all pretty shocked at his audacity at that moment. However, in 2015, Swift and West pubically made up on stage. Swift even presented him with the Video Vanguard award that night. Since then, the two have been in conflict yet again but to delve into that drama would take an entirely new article altogether.
