Well, the time has finally come! The first trailer for Harriet, the epic true story of Harriet Tubman, premiered this week. Here are five major details to chew on.
1. Cynthia Erivo embodies the heroic spirit of Tubman
There have been some rumblings about whether or not an African American should have been cast as Harriet Tubman instead of London-born Cynthia Erivo. However, she seems to be a solid choice for the role. Erivo radiates strength, grit, and drive. Subsequent trailers with more previews of Erivo’s powerful performance are expected to go live closer to the film’s release date.
2. Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jennifer Nettles costar

Director and co-writer Kasi Lemmons pulled together a great ensemble to bring this story to life. Singer Janelle Monáe wowed audiences in Moonlight as did Tony Award-winner Leslie Odom Jr., who originated the role of Aaron in Hamilton. Grammy Award-winner Jennifer Nettles also stars. Will these artists make a vocal contribution to the film’s soundtrack? Here’s hoping they do!
3. Director Kasi Lemmons injects realism on location
You may remember Kasi Lemmons’ directorial debut, Eve’s Bayou starring Samuel L. Jackson. It was shot on location in rural Louisiana. Lemmons transported us to another place and time by choosing the perfect locations to tell the poignant story. Well, she’s at it again.
Harriet was shot on location in Virginia. From the trailer footage, it seems that Lemmons captured the essence of the Underground Railroad’s secret routes.
4. The movie will have style and substance
Lemmons brings authenticity to the film through casting, locations, and music. Taking it a step further, she and co-writer Gregory Allen Howard incorporated little-known historical details into the script, which will make for a robust narrative.
While most moviegoers have a general idea of who Tubman was on the surface, we will be taken deeper into Tubman’s life journey in this film. Howard was the writer behind two other biographical dramas, Ali and Remember the Titans. Both were moving stories with substance and heart. Harriet promises to follow suit.
5. Harriet hits theaters during awards season
Harriet will come out the gate on Nov. 1, right at the beginning of awards season. There is already plenty of buzz surrounding the film. The competition is always stiff when it comes to the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the Oscars; and Harriet has thrown down the gauntlet.
