Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Saw! Let’s break down all the reasons to get excited about the Saw reboot.

The game-changing series, Saw, is one of the most successful horror franchises to date. Now, the Saw reboot is happening! The mind behind the new film? Chris Rock, who rose to stardom as one of the greatest storytellers in standup comedy. And starring with Rock? Samuel L. Jackson, one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.

But wait. There’s more. Filmmakers with roots in the Saw franchise have teamed up with Chris Rock to reimagine the story. Here’s a breakdown of why fans are already fired up about this project.

1. Chris Rock is leading the Saw reboot

We know Chris Rock as an actor, a filmmaker, and a hilarious stand-up comedian. He has been regarded as one of the best ever in comic history. But what can the funnyman bring to an established horror franchise like Saw?

For starters, his work ethic is rock-solid. Pun intended. As evidenced throughout his career, he consistently brings his A-game. From SNL to Everybody Hates Chris, whether he is writing, directing, or hosting the Oscars, Rock polishes his material until it is pure entertainment gold.

If you are wondering if Rock’s comic genius can translate to the horror genre, the answer is a resounding “yes”. When it comes to storytelling, comedy and horror share many commonalities. If you’re not convinced, just ask Jordan Peele.

2. Samuel L. Jackson costars as Rock’s father

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. Known for his authentic portrayals of diverse characters, as well as his salty language, audiences are enthralled by Jackson.

From good guys to villains, he can seamlessly morph into a clandestine government operative, a sympathetic addict, a wise-cracking hitman, or literally anything else a filmmaker can dream up. Oscar or no Oscar, Jackson is celebrated by fans and peers as one of the best actors of all time.

What does all this mean for the Saw reboot?

The fact that he has signed on for the reboot is reason enough to be giddy with excitement. Will Jackson deliver a trademark monologue as Rock’s on-screen dad? Here’s hoping! Regardless, Jackson is certain to bring a quality performance with loads of swag to the latest Saw film.

3. Franchise OG’s are on board for the Saw reboot

While it’s thrilling to add fresh blood to the series, there will also be some familiar forces behind the camera for the Saw reboot.

More from Movies

Director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV) and Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg are partnering with Rock. Plus, Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules will share a producing credit with him. Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are in the mix too as executive producers.

How will this impact the story?

These pros are sure to add lots of context to the narrative. Continuity is a notable element in the series, so having creative minds with a history inside the existing universe is a huge advantage. Fans will look forward to spying familiar elements and Easter eggs in the reboot.

4. Marisol Nichols and Max Minghella will appear

Many drama-lovers are familiar with Marisol Nichols and Max Minghella. Currently starring on The CW’s Riverdale, Nichols also had a memorable run on FOX’s 24. Fans of Hulu’s The Handmaids Tale will recognize Minghella as a key character in the dystopian show.

What will these actors add to the Saw reboot?

Both have ample experience on the big and small screens. Their hefty resumes include high-profile projects that surely required a great level of professionalism and creativity.

Now, Nichols and Minghella will have the opportunity to show off their impressive dramatic chops while sharing scenes with Rock and Jackson. It will be interesting to see in what way the chemistry sparks between the castmates.

5.    The Saw reboot will drop on May 15, 2020

Historically the films in the Saw series have been released close to Halloween, so this one was originally due in theaters October 23, 2020. However, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have accelerated the timing, setting a new release date of May 15, 2020.

What does this mean for fans?

While the fall timing worked for past installments, an earlier release date for the reboot could have some perks. Audiences will get to step into the world of Jigsaw – or a new protagonist – five months sooner than expected. Followers are already worked up into a frenzy – so, the sooner the better!

Another bonus is that the movie will avoid going head-to-head with the newest chapter of Halloween, set to open on October 16, 2020. What’s more, it looks like this currently untitled Saw project will be the first spring horror movie of 2020. This creates an ideal climate for Rock and company to achieve box office dominance, which could – with any luck – lead to sequels.

Lastly, an accelerated release schedule is indicative that things are moving smoothly with production. This means that the studio execs may be very confident in the product Rock and his partners will ultimately deliver.

In other words – bad movies get shelved, but masterpieces get fast-tracked. And I have a feeling that the Saw reboot will be a dark, twisted, bloody work of art.

dark. Next. Where can you stream Brightburn?

With Rock’s creative team, cast, and prime release date, there is boundless potential for success. Are you amped about the Saw reboot? Leave a comment and join the discussion!
