iZombie series finale brought us a time-jump at the end. Here’s a breakdown of the ending, including why some made the choices they did.

Caution: There are spoilers for the iZombie series finale in this post.

When I spoke to John Emmet Tracy about the iZombie final season, he said that the series finale wasn’t anything we’d expect. That was certainly the case. Multiple storylines were wrapped in quick succession. In the end, we got a 10-year time jump and it’s time to break that down.

The series finale ended with our main five protagonists. Yes, Liv, Major, Ravi, Clive, and Peyton all survived the ending, but not in the way we likely expected if we looked at the beginning of the entire series. After all, Liv and Major were still zombies and everyone had gone their separate ways, using technology to stay in touch.

Let’s start with explaining Clive’s end. He and Dale were still together. They’d decided they couldn’t live in Seattle anymore and moved to San Francisco, where they become co-captains of the SFPD. With Michelle’s death, Clive took her son in, taking responsibility as the potential father.

I don’t think we ever found out if he was the biological father, but it’s clear that Clive never really cared about that. There was a chance and he was stepping up in the way that Michelle knew he would. Dale accepted the boy, with her stepson and her daughter, Liv, being raised together.

Ravi and Peyton were able to take the cure and ended up taking jobs in Atlanta. Peyton is the D.A. while Ravi runs the CDC. It turns out that with the cure, Ravi gained fame and fortune. However, he’s ever the same, wanting to continue helping people and that’s why he’s the head of the CDC. We know that he’ll do a great job.

But the biggest twist came with Liv and Major. The world believes the two are dead. However, Liv survived the bombing that killed Michelle and Major survived being shot by Dead-Enders.

The two made a choice to remain zombies in the iZombie series finale. Why when all Liv ever wanted was the cure to become human again? She made a huge sacrifice at the end of the fourth season to allow Dale to have the only cure to be happy with Clive.

Well, it was all about the zombie kids. The affordable cure was out there but not everyone would take it. Plenty of people had been scratched to save their lives, and it was something that was still ongoing. Those with terminal illnesses would be terminal again if they took the cure.

Since many were children and teenagers, they needed parents to look after them for eternity. Who better than the two who had helped them for the last few years? Liv and Major remained as zombie parents together, raising their zombie kids on Zombie Island.

It was a beautiful and happy ending for iZombie.

Of course, there was the bittersweet element of the friends being separated. Liv did make an offer. All it would take is a scratch for them to live on Zombie Island together. For a second, it looked like they were going to consider it, but they most likely wouldn’t.

They’re all happy with their lives at the moment and they can still talk through virtual reality. It’s just going to be hard for Liv and Major to see their friends grow old while they remain forever young.

But why offer a 10-year time jump? That was simple. It left some of the surprises of what happened to Liv and Major. Ravi, Peyton, and Clive were able to tell their story, showing us the fame they received after helping to bring the zombie cure and save the world. However, it also showed that they needed their own lives after that. There was hope for the future for each of them, and we got to see the humans aging while zombies remained the same.
