Joker is now in theaters and causing a lot of debate, here is the big question we have after watching the movie!

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker aka Arthur Fleck, a man struggling with mental illnesses and Gotham’s crumbling society. Arthur is horrified and appalled by humanity. Instead of helping each other and offering support to the weak, the rich thrive and are greedy. To be honest, it’s tough not to understand and see how and why Arthur goes from already unstable to completely insane.

Please note: There are spoilers ahead if you have not seen the movie in theaters just yet! Watch it first before reading ahead. Seriously, significant spoilers!

This movie is bold and holds nothing back. Joker has a clear and ambiguous stance on society and, depending on your own personal views, you’ll find yourself leaning more towards one side of the issue. Either way, Phoenix’s performance as Arthur is fantastic. He acts his clown wig off and carries the movie even at its slowest moments.

Joker works fine as a standalone film, just as it intended to. And it also steps out of the comic book pages just a bit to present new ideas and questions about Joker’s origin, one of which we’ll discuss, below.

Is Bruce Wayne really Arthur Fleck’s half brother?

This was a bold path to present in Joker. Is there a possibility, at least in the Joker universe, that Bruce Wayne is Arthur’s half sibling, making Thomas Wayne Arthur’s father? Do you believe Penny Fleck (Arthur’s mom) was truly insane and made it all up? I’m on the fence.

Sure, there are documents filed that state Penny adopted Bruce. But, in the tape, she claims Thomas created those fake documents to draw attention away from him. Thomas, according to Penny, always denied that he had anything to do with Penny. I’m sure you can understand why Thomas didn’t want to be associated with her, as wrong as it may be. I wouldn’t put it pass him to go to great lengths to deny it and even get Penny locked up. Also, what adoption agency would allow an unstable woman such as Penny to adopt a child? It doesn’t add up.

On the other hand, Penny could have been delusional and have fallen in love with Thomas. She, perhaps, adopted Arthur after Thomas denied her. Let’s also not forget how, whether adopted or not, Penny allowed her boyfriend to physically and mentally abuse Arthur. Part (maybe even all) of the reason Arthur is so mentally ill is the torture he went through.
