We’ve seen Meredith go back and forth on her relationship with DeLuca in Grey’s Anatomy. However, in Season 16, Episode 8, DeLuca had to make a choice.

Caution: There are spoilers in this post for Grey’s Anatomy Season 16, Episode 8. I highly suggest you watch the flashback-focused episode first.

Grey’s Anatomy has spent all season so far focused on Meredith’s case. Would she lose her license for committing insurance fraud at the end of the previous season? We got our answers at the end of the episode, but that’s not the focus of this article. It’s all about the choice DeLuca made.

The beginning of the end

More from ABC

Throughout the episode, DeLuca tried to be there for Meredith. With all the stress getting to her, she finally made it clear that there wouldn’t be a relationship if she lost her license. She couldn’t be with DeLuca if he was a surgeon and she wasn’t.

Of course, that left them in an awkward place. I did feel for DeLuca at this moment because it certainly showed Meredith’s feelings towards him. While she likes him, she doesn’t have the love and respect that she had for Derek.

And Derek’s memory was alive throughout the episode. The doctor who had killed Derek back in Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 was one of those making a decision on Meredith’s fate. Meredith couldn’t help but call him out on his lack of action to save her husband. After all, if her license was in jeopardy, why wasn’t his?

That was the moment DeLuca realized just how much Derek meant to Meredith—still means to Meredith. He could tell from that impassioned speech that nobody was going to come close to Derek in her heart.

While he may have known that deep down, this was the moment he could accept it. Sure, what they have is good, but it’s not great. He and Meredith do work as a team, but it is a one-sided relationship at times. Even Meredith has been going back and forth on whether she wanted to be with him for the long-term or not.

DeLuca’s decision

So, DeLuca made the decision to end it with Meredith. At least, for now. There is a chance that they could end up back together, but right now, they’re taking a break. And Meredith is sad but she doesn’t seem all that broken up about it.

DeLuca did make the right choice. He does deserve someone who respects him in the way that Meredith respected Derek. While I really didn’t like Derek (he was egotistical and always put his own career first), that doesn’t stop me from seeing that Meredith was deeply in love with him. There is no man that will ever give Meredith everything she had with Derek.

We’ve seen DeLuca put Meredith before himself time and time again. I loved it at first, but he was willing to go to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. He was willing to lose his license so Meredith could keep hers. It was completely one-sided because Meredith would never do that for him. Sure, she never even asked him to do that, but it shows the type of guy DeLuca is in a relationship.

He deserves someone who would offer to do the same. DeLuca deserves someone who respects him in the way Meredith respected Derek. So, yes, he did make the right choice.

Will this be the end of that relationship? I’m on the fence of whether I want it to be. We saw Meredith and Derek go back and forth on their relationship at first. There is a chance Meredith will see the type of guy she’s now lost and make some changes, but right now, they are better apart.
