Frozen 2: Anna’s storyline is an important reminder for all

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE – In “Frozen 2,” Anna’s positive spirit is reflected in a song she begins in an effort to assuage Olaf’s uncertainty about the ever-evolving world around him. The song, “Some Things Never Change,”—which features Anna, Olaf, Elsa and Kristoff —introduces the idea of change to the story, and despite its title, it’s also a promise that change is on the horizon. On the surface, Frozen 2 seems to be about Elsa. It’s a journey into the past to figure out why she has powers. Yet, there’s an important reminder for Anna.

Caution: There are spoilers in this post for Frozen 2.

At first, Frozen 2 looks to be all about Elsa. The elder sister is the one who needs to go on the journey to find out the truth about her powers. She’s the one that awakens the spirits and is the one who can get everyone through the fog into the Enchanted Forest.

While it all seems to be about the elder sister, there’s an extremely important storyline for Anna. The younger sister goes on her own journey, one that offers an important reminder for all of us.

Elsa is incapacitated by the ghosts of the past and the spirits around her. She sends out a message to Anna, passing on the memory of the past in the hope that Anna can do something to help Arandale. What exactly can Anna do? It’s not like Anna can do much, right?

Well, that’s the important reminder. We don’t need powers to be heroes. Anna realizes that her sister is gone when Olaf turns into flurries of snow. As she mourns for Olaf, she mourns for her sister, knowing what this means. But instead of wallowing, she goes on a mission to save Arandale, to do something that she believed Elsa had given her life to achieve.

Anna takes a beat to think of a plan. All alone, she realizes what she needs to do. The dam needs to be broken to allow the water to flow. Even if it means Arandale will be lost forever, she needs to make things right with the spirits. And with just her legs and a few rocks, she’s able to get the spirits to help her destroy the dam and set everything right again.

At no point does Anna wish she had powers. She knows that she is all everyone needs right now. Only she can make this right. And with that, she reminds all of us that you don’t need powers to be a hero.

The best thing is that this is a continuation of a message from the first movie. Anna went on a journey to get her sister back despite having no powers. She wasn’t going to let anything hold her back.
