The Magicians certainly feels different without Quentin in the Season 5 trailer. Death is easy. Life is hard, but how hard? Here are the five big takeaways.

Life is hard. That’s a pointer made in The Magicians Season 5 trailer, a trailer that certainly feels different to previous years. And that’s because there is no Quentin seen. He is mentioned. A LOT! This is a season about honoring him and his sacrifice made at the end of the fourth season.

While we’re not happy that he’s gone, the show will go on. The group of students will face the next threats. And it’s clear that there is more than one in the trailer for the upcoming fifth season.

Before we get into the breakdown, I’ll leave you with the promo for the season. It’s full of magic, sorrow, intensity, and so much more.

Now that you’ve had a chance to watch the promo (and if anything like me, for what feels like the millionth time), we’ll head into the five biggest takeaways. If you find trailers spoilery then expect some spoilery material moving forward.

5. Quentin is definitely not forgotten

More from Syfy

From the very start of the trailer, it’s clear that Quentin will not be forgotten. They know that Quentin’s sacrifice brought back magic, but that doesn’t mean any of them are happy.

Like life, there was so much unsaid and undone. There will be stories of lost love, friendships tested, and much more. And it looks like Alice isn’t just going to accept that Quentin is gone for good. Could we see her bring him back or at least try?

4. Now there’s too much magic

First someone was trying to steal magic. Then there wasn’t any magic. Now there’s too much magic. Is it all that surprising that The Magicians Season 5 is going to have a focus on magic again?

Enchantments are going to fail. Spells will have too much power behind them. Expect plenty of problems as the magicians get used to dealing with the extra power boosts their spells will have and the consequences that come with those power boosts.

While dealing with grief and the problems in Fillory, the group of unlikely friends and heroes will need to figure out the next step.

3. Eliot is heading back to Fillory

There are moments of Eliot in Fillory. He’s in a court surrounded by people and he looks to be on a quest. This is a guy who will feel like he has to make amends for the things that he did while the Beast was in control, not that we feel he needs to make amends.

At the same time, he’s grieving. Eliot was finally able to admit his love for Quentin and it was too late. Now he needs to move forward with his life, and it’s certainly not going to be easy. Out of all the characters grieving, I think Eliot is going to be the one that we’ll be able to connect with the most.

2. Margo and Josh continue their unsuspecting relationship

During Season 4, Margo and Josh hooked up. And this wasn’t just some hookup. When Josh needed her, she was willing to risk being infected by the werewolf virus to help him. It was clear that her feelings for him had grown.

Those feelings haven’t changed despite everything that’s happened. Margo and Josh will continue their relationship if the trailer is anything to judge.

1. There’s more than one problem

Something that’s made clear from the various snapshots of storylines is that there’s more than one problem. Julia is at Brakebills with what looks like Alice, Kady, and Penny. They’ll be there with Dean Fogg to figure out the magic problem.

But that’s not the only issue at hand. When Margo returned to Fillory, she learned that Fen and been overthrown. There’s a darkness in the place and now she’ll need to head to Fillory and Josh to help them. But it looks like that won’t be the only problem there, either. There’s a moment of Fen and Margo facing against each other.

Along with that, Eliot seems to be on his own quest. Will this be one connected to Margo, who he clearly has his connection back with? I love that we’ll get to see Eliot and Margo back on the same page again. Last season without the two together was hard.
