New Amsterdam renewed: How many extra seasons has it gained?
NBC has confirmed a future for New Amsterdam. This is more than just one extra season. How many years are we guaranteed new episodes?
It’s the winter TCAs, which means networks are making announcements. They’re mostly good ones about the future of shows or the companies, and some good news from NBC is about New Amsterdam.
The medical drama has caught the hearts of many, and now we know that we get more. And not just one season. NBC has renewed New Amsterdam for three more seasons. We’ve got Max and co. until the 2022-2023 season at least.

Multi-season renewals have become much more common for many networks, especially for shows that have been performing well. ABC renewed Grey’s Anatomy for two seasons last year, while CBS offered multi-season renewals for Young Sheldon and Mom. NBC also offered a three-season renewal for This Is Us last year, taking the show to the 2021-2022 season.
It’s the first renewal of the season for NBC. The renewal isn’t all that surprising considering the series is just behind the likes of This Is Us and the One Chicago shows. It’s also extremely popular in the Live + 7 Day ratings, according to Deadline. NBC is looking at the digital performances more, especially with the upcoming Peacock service.
Paul Telegdy spoke about the renewal, and it almost sounds like there are talks of growing the franchise. He noted that he “can imagine a whole world around New Amsterdam.” Are some spin-offs happening? It’s plausible, creating a franchise similar to the One Chicago shows or compared to the Grey’s Anatomy/Station 19 universe.
The three-season renewal comes ahead of the midseason premiere on Tuesday night. We’ll get to find out what’s happening now that a couple of female inmates are walking around, ready to kill a whistleblower.
